Will Beaver Stadium stay dry for Penn State’s White Out? Here’s the forecast
AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Steady rain is not expected for Penn State’s White Out on Saturday.
- Beaver Stadium crowds can likely expect above-average temperatures.
- There’s still a chance of showers after State College received 3 inches of rain this week.
Although a few days of showers brought much-needed rain to Happy Valley this week, Beaver Stadium should stay mostly dry for the big game.
The latest forecasts for Penn State football’s matchup against the Oregon Ducks expect the White Out game crowd to avoid any significant rain Saturday night. Though he can’t entirely rule out a shower or two, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines says Mother Nature already got most of this week’s rain out of her system.
“There’s no doubt we needed the rain this week,” Kines told the Centre Daily Times. “Fortunately, at least as far as the people who are tailgating and going to the game tomorrow are concerned, the rain is basically done with for this week.”
If rain arrives on Saturday, Kines expects only light showers or sprinkles.
State College has received roughly 3 inches of rain since Monday — equal to roughly the same amount of precipitation the area received from mid-July through mid-September, according to National Weather Service archive data. Every Pennsylvania county is currently facing at least abnormally dry conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, which reports that all of Centre County is experiencing moderate drought through Sept. 23.
Temperatures on Saturday should top out in the mid-70s, according to AccuWeather’s latest forecasts. That would check in well above the average high temperature of 68 degrees for Sept. 27 in State College, according to NWS alamanc data.
Conditions should get cooler around the game’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff and reach a low of 58 degrees overnight.
“[Those temperatures] are still better than what they should be this time of year,” Kines said. “Typically, we’d be in the upper 60s for highs. Anytime you’re talking about a temperature with a seven in front of it, you’re doing pretty good for this time of year.”
Penn State fans heading to the tailgate lots should expect more clouds than sunshine during the morning and afternoon, Kines said.
The tailgate lots themselves may wind up a muddy mess after inches of rain drenched Happy Valley earlier this week.
“The good news is that the sun is out at times today, and it’s drying out,” Kines said. “Still, I’ve got to believe that some of the lots are going to be kind of muddy.”
As always, fans should note that umbrellas are among the many items prohibited in Beaver Stadium, according to Penn State’s policies. Should a shower roll through, you’re better off throwing on a clear poncho or rain jacket — so long as it matches Penn State’s full-stadium White Out tradition.
