Centre County roads could be wet for Thanksgiving travel this year, forecasts indicate.

Showers are expected through the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 26, with temperatures in the 50s — higher than average for the time of month — and a moderate breeze. There is a lower chance of rain that morning in the three cities served by State College Regional Airport: Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington, D.C. The rain should peter out by late afternoon as offices close and outbound peaks.

Centre County temperatures are expected to begin dropping around sunset and continue falling into Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27. They aren’t forecasted to get much higher than freezing, remaining that way through midday Saturday, Nov. 29 in lower elevation areas. Higher elevation areas aren’t forecasted to see a significant temperature uptick until Sunday, Nov. 30. Moderate winds are expected Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28.

Return travel over the weekend could be affected by rain and snow throughout the county. A small chance of precipitation Saturday, when temperatures will be in the low- to mid-30s throughout the county, will give way to a high chance of precipitation Sunday, when the highways are busiest.

Sunday morning could see snowfall throughout the county, though temperatures are expected to creep above freezing as the day progresses.

The Thanksgiving weather could lead into a mixed bag for the winter, with forecasters split on whether Centre County will see significant snowfall this season.
