Snow causes closures, delays, traffic impacts in Centre County
Centre County schools were closed Tuesday and Penn State delayed opening due to a storm that’s brought up to 4 inches of snow to parts of the county.
State College Area School District closed, while Bellefonte, Bald Eagle Area and Penns Valley Area had virtual instruction days. Penn State canceled classes, work and activities at its University Park campus until noon.
Centre County and other areas of central Pennsylvania were under a winter weather advisory through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Between 2 and 6 inches of snow were predicted in what the National Weather Service in State College called the “first widespread snow accumulation of the season.”
“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,” the advisory states. “Plan on slippery road conditions.”
Below is a look at winter weather impacts across Centre County.
Closures and delays
- State College Area School District schools closed and after-school activities are cancelled.
- Bellefonte and Bald Eagle Area school districts have a Flexible Instruction Day and Penns Valley Area issued a Virtual Instruction Day.
- The Philipsburg, Snow Shoe, Centre Hall and Bellefonte senior centers, along with the Centre Region Active Adult Center, are closed Tuesday.
- The opening of the Centre County Courthouse was delayed until noon Tuesday; other county offices opened at 10 a.m., 90 minutes later than usual.
- Centre County Office of Aging canceled Home Delivered Meal services for Tuesday.
- Centre Volunteers in Medicine is closed.
- College Township trash pickup will be late due to a garbage truck getting stuck in the snow, the township posted on Facebook Tuesday morning.
Road impacts
- Vehicle restrictions on Interstate 80 east of the Centre County line are no longer active as of 3:30 p.m.
- Speed restrictions on Interstate 80, Interstate 99 and U.S. Route 22 Speeds are no longer active as of 2:30 p.m. A closure of U.S. Route 322 between Philipsburg and Port Matilda was resolved Tuesday morning.
- What Centre County 911 called “standstill” traffic on Benner Pike near the Nittany Mall appears to have cleared up.
Snow emergencies
- Harris Township is under a snow emergency, the township announced Monday night. Vehicles must be removed from public streets, and those without off-street parking options can use Nittany View Park, Blue Spring Park, Yoder Preserve and the municipal building lot.
- Patton Township is under a snow emergency, the township posted on Facebook. Vehicles must be removed from public streets.
