Will winter weather hamper the Pinstripe Bowl? What to know about travel, ticket refunds
Winter weather is expected to affect Pinstripe Bowl travel, with snow and sleet sweeping east through Central Pennsylvania into the New York City area Friday.
The game, which will see Penn State face off against Clemson at Yankee Stadium at noon Saturday, may see some inclement weather, but will likely be spared the brunt of the storm.
“The earlier you leave, the better today,” AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines said Friday morning. “I mean, maybe you can get away with leaving at 1 or 2, but you’re kind of playing with fire today.”
Vehicle restrictions, including a ban on buses, hit Interstate 80 in Central Pennsylvania at 10 a.m. Friday due to forecasted sleet and freezing rain. The vehicle restrictions will extend east to the Poconos at 2 p.m., while New Jersey and New York haven’t announced restrictions on 80 or other roadways as of 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Between 4 and 6 inches of snowfall is possible in Eastern Pennsylvania and the New York area Friday afternoon and evening.
“Anybody that’s lived in Pennsylvania knows what I-80 can look like during a winter storm, and it’s usually not very pretty,” Kines said.
Weather for Saturday’s Pinstripe Bowl
The weather is likely to clear up in time for the noon Bowl game Saturday, though Kines cautioned the cold weather could be accompanied by residual rain or sleet.
Ticket sales for the game are final, and no refunds will be given out except to those who spent $12.75 on ticket insurance.
Return travel could also be hairy, with snow and sleet possible Sunday afternoon in the Poconos.
