Snow to make a comeback in Centre County this week. Here’s how much to expect

Winter isn’t dead.

Centre County is likely to see temperatures drop and snowfall in the coming week after a stretch of warmth and rain. Wednesday night brought a dusting of snow, and AccuWeather and other commercial weather services predict more to follow Thursday, Jan. 15.

“Anywhere from a coating to as much as an inch, coupled with temperatures dropping into the 20s, means that untreated surfaces will turn icy and slippery,” AccuWeather meteorologist Bob Larson said Jan. 14.

Larson added the county may see scattered snow showers Thursday, when temperatures are forecasted to drop into the single digits. Both Centre County’s mountains and lower-lying areas are expected to see winter weather.

Temperatures are expected to stay at or near freezing for at least the next week. The National Weather Service predicts 1 to 2 inches of snowfall in the county’s mountainous western half from Thursday to Saturday, Jan. 17, with remote chances for more. Larson said Centre County could see deposits of an inch or so going into the weekend.

Flurries may follow throughout the week, with wind gusts giving the appearance of squalls.

“I think very late next week, we see temperatures moderate again a little bit,” Larson said. “Any storm that would follow at the end of next week or the start of that weekend — I’m speaking like 10 days from now — could just as easily be a wintry mix or rain as opposed to snow.”
