Centre County school districts issue two-hour delays for Monday. What to know
As a bitter cold stretch continues in Centre County, some school districts announced Sunday that they will delay opening schools by two hours Monday morning, when below-zero temperatures are expected.
State College and Philipsburg-Osceola area school districts will both operate on a two-hour delay due to the weather. Bald Eagle Area School District will also have a two-hour delay, but cited a boil water advisory in effect through Tuesday morning for the Wingate campus as the reason.
The Milesburg Borough Water Authority issued the advisory after a system shutdown Saturday to repair a leak.
The delay will allow maintenance staff time to cover water fountains and distribute water at Wingate Elementary and the high school, the district wrote in a social media post.
The National Weather Service in State College issued a cold weather advisory for much of central Pennsylvania that’s in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday. Temperatures as low as -15 degrees are expected, the NWS said.
“Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure and lack of proper clothing,” the advisory states.
According to AccuWeather, the high temperature for Monday in State College will be 27 degrees, but it will take a while to get there. At 7 a.m., the temperature is forecast to be -5 degrees and is expected to be just above 0 by 9 a.m.
SCASD issued a series of two-hour delays in late January, also due to extreme cold. At that time, Superintendent Curtis Johnson explained that about 600 students walk to school in the district, and various factors are considered in the decision to issue delays or closures.
After a weekend of frigid temperatures and wind gusts that reached nearly 50 mph, according to the NWS, warmer weather is on the way. AccuWeather predicts a high of 40 degrees on Tuesday, and hovering around the low- to mid-30s the rest of the week.
