Flash flood warning issued for part of Centre County as storms move through area

A flash flood warning was issued for part of Centre County Sunday afternoon as storms brought heavy rainfall to the area.

The flash flood warning issued by the National Weather Service in State College is in effect through 7:45 p.m. for south-central Centre County, including State College, Bellefonte and Boalsburg.

The alert warns of possible flash flooding of small creeks and streams, highways, streets and underpasses and other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Between 1-2 inches of rain had fallen as of about 4:30 p.m., the NWS said, with additional rainfall amounts of up to 2 inches possible in areas.

“Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads,” the alert reads. “In hilly terrain, hundreds of low water crossings are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.”

In addition to the flash flood warning, the NWS has also issued flood watch for southern Centre County through 8 p.m. Monday.

Rain is expected to continue Monday, according to AccuWeather’s forecast, with showers and a heavy thunderstorm expected Monday afternoon.
