Much of central Pennsylvania — including all of Centre County — is under a winter storm warning until Monday afternoon, according to an alert issued by the National Weather Service.

Heavy snowfall is expected with between 4 and 9 inches possible, the NWS said. Wind gusts could also reach as high as 40 mph.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the alert stated. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.”

The NWS previously issued a winter storm watch on Saturday, and later upgraded it to a winter storm warning.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys said this would be the first blizzard in about four years for much of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts. AccuWeather reported that one of the hardest hit areas — likely Long Island to southeastern New England — could get as much as 26 inches of snow, although 12-18 inches was more probable.

Centre County will not be among the hardest hit because it’s more than 200 miles away from the coast. However, the NWS acknowledged that some uncertainty remains about where the heaviest snow bands in central Pennsylvania will occur, so snow totals could potentially vary from one area of the county to the next.

The NWS is responsible for issuing winter advisories, watches and warnings throughout the season. Warnings are the most severe and are issued for a significant weather event.
