Serving a cause greater than oneself

The American flag has strong symbolic power. We learn what the stars, stripes, colors, canton and field all represent. We are taught to respect this emblem of our nation, our national standard, the ensign of our democracy. We also know not to disrespect the American flag as it brings dishonor upon those choosing to do that.

All of us are privileged stewards of this symbol. The men and women serving our country in the military stand at attention each morning during the playing of our national anthem. The wounded soldier leaving the plane on crutches, straightens himself and offers a smart salute to the first flag he sees. Wounded or disabled soldiers and sailors return on a litter, holding the flag of a grateful nation. Sadly, many return to their communities and towns underneath the flag of their coffin.

At a military cemetery, the quietness of respect, remembrance and reverence is interrupted by the snap of fabric in the breeze and sound of halyard against flagpole, a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice and price paid for us the living.

Those who take a knee in protest of the flag have a right to do so, but many of them feel right at home with the Hollywood crowd, some feel with it, others glib; perhaps some are doing it in righteous protest. Having a right to do something doesn’t mean one should do something. The misinformed proclaim kneeling is a sign of reverence to the flag. Not true. Standing is showing respect for our flag, kneeling is showing veneration to God.

On this Veterans Day weekend, ask a veteran, they know the difference between respect and disrespect, of being self-centered and serving a cause greater than oneself.
