PSU should get out of real estate

Although Penn State’s alma mater includes the line, “May no act of ours bring shame,” the university itself is embarrassing alumni, employees and all who care about it.

Even while touting its excellent environmental and sustainability programs and endeavors, Penn State is defending its decision to sell land to Toll Brothers for a large student housing complex atop a major well-field. This proposed development has major potential to damage our water supply. Toll Brothers has already received several citations and fines for environmental disregard in their projects across the country.

Penn State must walk away from this sale, regardless of the agreement in place. To say it can not be done is deflecting the desire to do so. The university should focus squarely on providing the quality education for which it was founded and get out of the real estate business.
