Finding a new place to shop

It was just announced by Giant Food Stores that a new store will open in the Atherton corridor. That side of town really needs another supermarket? There are already six supermarkets within 5 miles along north and south Atherton. Three Weis stores, a Wegmans, Walmart and another Giant!

I’m angry that part of the announcement is that the Giant on East College Avenue will close. We, the residents of College Township, Benner Township, Spring Township and Bellefonte, aren’t enough to keep the existing Giant open? The spokesperson for Giant said the new store would “greatly enhance the shopping experience.” We don’t deserve to be “enhanced?” The spokesperson also said the new store would “provide more direct access to the surrounding residential neighborhoods and convenient parking.” We need access on this side of town and the parking is fine.

I’ll be writing to Samantha Krepps, Giant’s public and community relations manager, and Rick Herring, president and CEO, at 1149 Harrisburg Pike Carlisle, PA 17013, to voice my concerns. Then I will be finding a new place to shop.

Carrie Fala, Benner Township
