Resisting authoritarianism
Steps to take to avoid the “coming authoritarianism”: Do not obey in advance, too much power is given to an authoritarian without need; defend the media, the courts and our institutions; set good professional ethics in spite of the bad example from above; be wary of politicians’ use of the words “terrorism,” “extremism,” “exception” and “emergency”; be calm when the unthinkable arrives, they will create or allow a terrorist act to gain absolute control — don’t allow it; don’t repeat phrases they speak, think for yourself, stand up and stand out, someone has to set a good example; don’t abandon the facts, don’t buy into the lies, investigate and support independent journalism; make your voice heard in group actions; march; make eye contact to break down unnecessary barriers to know those around you; don’t get used to negative signs of hate, resist and set a good example; vote while you can and fight for unadulterated voting rights, hindering the one party state; give to good causes supporting civic society; establish a private life, free of malware, email is skywriting, have exchanges in person. Authoritarians want a hook to hang you on to resolve legal troubles. Learn from other countries, make friends abroad, have your passports ready, watch for paramilitaries, like ICE. When paramilitary, police and military intermingle, the game is over. If you are military, police or former, be ready to say no to these activities, be courageous as possible, be a patriot, support the Constitution.
