GOP learning ‘what goes around comes around’

Republican members of the House of Representatives claim that the Democrats have been itching to impeach President Trump since the 2016 election, and that their initial reasons having failed to generate sufficient outrage led to a political spectacle over Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

House Republicans have referred to the proceedings as a hoax and a witch hunt, with Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia likening them to the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate. House Republicans should know of what they speak, having subjected Bill Clinton to just such treatment by pursuing the Whitewater investigation, followed by the death of Vince Foster, and ultimately the Monica Lewinsky affair.

But that’s not even House Republicans’ most recent political spectacle. With the House Select Committee on Benghazi they employed McCarthyesque tactics, in this case Rep. Kevin McCarthy, to attack Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to prevent her from getting elected. In 2015 McCarthy is quoted as saying on Hannity, “Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping.”

It’s just a little ironic, that having failed to incriminate Secretary Clinton over Benghazi, House Republicans then went after her for using a private server, the same server that President Trump mentions in his July 25 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky. Perhaps it’s true that what goes around comes around. With one major difference — Secretary Clinton had the guts to testify to Congress.

Trump is an A+ president

How should you evaluate presidents? The Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to protect us from ourselves. Each branch is responsible for specific duties. All are to work together for our good. There’s always quibbling, but the Constitution provides the best “human” way of maintaining freedoms and still getting work done.

Voters come in all flavors — young, old, smart, not-so-smart, informed, not-so-informed, gullible, suspicious, emotional, practical. Amazing, anything works. The Constitution protects us. So, what makes a good president? Good looks, public speaking, personality, brains, experience?

We have a problem. A small group of politicians want to misuse the Constitution as a cover to advance their political objectives using ways that go way beyond what our Founding Fathers intended. Teamwork and unity have been trashed by vicious arrogance.

I have seen many presidents. The fairest evaluation is looking at things they have done that advance our nation. Trump is an egotistical businessman not a politician, an “outsider,” not part of the “elite.” But his report card is extraordinary. You must be blind not to see what this president has done. He sees America from a businessman’s eyes not a politician’s. We elect presidents to get work done and based on that Trump gets an A+.
