Letters: Remember Toomey’s record in 2022; Trump delivers on promises
Remember Toomey’s record in 2022
Our Republican Senator Pat Toomey has been a strong Trump collaborator since his election. He won his election by less than 2% but only represents the voters who support Trump. He voted against the two articles of impeachment. He voted against having witnesses in the impeachment proceedings. He has supported Trump and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell consistently. He voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) with no replacement. He voted for the deficit increasing tax cut that mainly went to the very wealthy. He consistently votes for unqualified federal justices who are generally anti-labor. He raises no objections to the removal of inspector generals, who are there to stand against corruption and waste of taxpayer money. Toomey never tells his constituents when Trump makes obvious lies. He takes no stand against the corrupt influence of the president in Justice Department decisions. He is not fighting against Trump’s attempts to discredit mail voting. He is not a moderate and voters should remember his record if he runs for reelection in 2022.
Trump delivers on promises
Joe Biden claims he will enact police reform if elected, but it was then Senator Biden who helped craft and pass the 1994 Crime Bill which was heavily biased against African Americans. During his eight years as Vice President, his administration didn’t fix the inequities in this legislation. It was President Trump that finally implemented meaningful criminal justice reform in 2018.
Joe said if elected, he would get tough on China. However, during the eight years he and President Obama were in power, nothing was done to stem China’s theft of intellectual property nor China’s other unfair business practices. President Trump was the first to insist on a fair and reciprocal trade deal and to punish China with tariffs when they cheated.
Biden’s latest claim is that his administration will buy American and hire American. What a change! The country lost manufacturing jobs during the Obama/Biden administration, and we were told these jobs are not coming back. In just three years, President Trump added a half million new manufacturing jobs, and more are on their way!
History shows Joe Biden will say and promise anything to become president, yet nothing will happen. President Trump’s philosophy is promises made/promises kept. He delivers!
Legislators were MIA on opportunity to fix gerrymandering
Gerrymandering in Pennsylvania is unfair.
Our legislators had an opportunity to fix this, but they failed. Now the deadline for amending the Pennsylvania Constitution has passed. We lost the chance to establish an independent Citizen’s Commission for drawing district boundaries for Congress and the Pennsylvania legislature.
Instead, after the 2020 census, politicians (including Sen. Jake Corman and Rep. Kerry Benninghoff) will meet secretly to determine new district maps.
Reform bills were introduced back in April 2019, but never came to a vote. House Bills 22 and 23, and Senate Bills 1022 and 1023 had:
- The most cosponsors of any bills this session
- Support of municipal resolutions representing over 70% of the state
- Over 100,000 petition signatures
- Polls showing more than 2/3 of Pennsylvania voters support a Citizen’s Redistricting Commission
In response to thousands of postcards, emails, letters and phone calls from constituents, personal meetings, demonstrations at their offices, and town hall questioning, Corman and Benninghoff only made vague statements of support.
And then what did they do? Nothing!
The Senate and House Committee Chairs, John DiSanto and Garth Everett, killed the bills without hearings.
Corman and Benninghoff were missing in action.
They must be salivating now at the prospect of drawing themselves unassailable districts, and rewarding their friends with districts computer-designed to rig their reelections.
Our government continues unaccountable, unresponsive and unable to hear those citizens it’s supposed to serve.
But there’s a solution. Stop gerrymandering! Vote Corman, Benninghoff and the rest out of office!
