Letters: Fruitless hunts for proof; Pa. voters decide outcome of election

Fruitless hunts for proof

A front page headline in the Nov. 13 CDT tells us that the “Trump team hunts for proof of voter fraud.”

While they’re at it, the Trump team should also hunt for proof of the Easter Bunny, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Man in the Moon. They will have a much better chance of success.

Pa. voters decide outcome of election

I just read state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe’s “plan” for stealing Pennsylvania’s electoral votes. I am appalled! Metcalfe has been laying these plans for months. He delivers a long rant about the vote being flawed. He is blatantly attempting to obstruct and delay until after the December deadline for certifying the votes. If he is successful, that would mean Pennsylvania would miss the deadline for certification. Then the General Assembly in Harrisburg would be able to nullify all the Pennsylvania votes instead naming 20 of their own choices as delegates to the Electoral College. Who do you think would win the Pennsylvania vote then? Certainly not voters.

He ended his rant like this: “Faith in government begins with faith in the elections which select that government. Just as Pennsylvania, as the Keystone State, led the founding of our nation, Pennsylvania should also lead the way by making sure our Commonwealth continues to stand as a keystone in our nation where free and fair elections are of paramount concern, no matter the final outcome of those elections.”

He wants to nullify the votes of all Pennsylvania voters, replacing them with the views of the state Republican Party. He should lead the way to free and fair elections. He could do that by accepting the peoples’ choice, moving his own party back into the mainstream, admitting there was no fraud, accepting this election as free and fair, and certifying the outcome, like it or not!

Pennsylvania voters get to decide, not our legislators.

Continue vigilance through anticipated long winter

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I want to talk about gratitude. Let’s take a moment to thank everyone for doing their part to keep our community safe during this public health crisis. We are doing good work in our community. Thanks to our friends and neighbors who work in health care and public safety. In addition to the pandemic, the flu season is upon us, so please don’t let your guard down. I am concerned about the increase in positive COVID-19 cases in Centre County. The weekly positivity rate is 8.4%, according to the state Department of Health. But that is not the whole picture! Most of these are people getting tested voluntarily, so possibly even higher numbers might be infected. If the positivity rate continues to climb, as we’ve seen, we are in for a long winter. I am asking for your continued vigilance in this – our shared responsibility. Please wear a mask, wash your hands coming home and keep your distance. Thank you and stay safe, save lives.

Coach with PSU ties should lead football team

I am not a fan of James Franklin as the head coach of the Penn State football team for a number of reasons. That said, it has always been my contention that whoever coaches this team, following Joe Paterno, should have ties to the university. The PSU football program is unique in college football because it has shown stability in purpose and leadership over an extended period of time. It is a community unto itself and I believe it should continue to be so. Following the Jerry Sandusky ugliness, the university chose to look outside the program for a new head coach, which I feel was a huge mistake. In looking to distance itself from any connection to Sandusky, the university hired Bill O’Brien as a temporary Band-Aid followed by James Franklin. Although he is a good recruiter who has brought excellent talent to the program, I don’t believe he is the one to take this team to elite status. It is past time that we return to what made this program great: a coach with ties to the Penn State community.
