Letters: The hypocrisy of Greg Abbott; A very prophetic message
The hypocrisy of Greg Abbott
Another Texas mass shooting, this time in an elementary school. Governor Greg Abbott shed the usual crocodile tears, lamenting the “senseless” outcome of innocent deaths, and professing how his heart goes out to the families of the victims.
But, as always, he will take no action to contribute to even a slight lessening of the frequency of these “senseless” acts.
On the other hand, a 13-year-old girl who becomes pregnant following a rape by a family member must live with the pain and shame for the next nine months because, after all, Texas “honors human life.”
Where is the honoring of human life on behalf of 19 elementary school kids?
A very prophetic message
A letter by Suzanne Colvin, “Much at stake with AG races,” appeared in the May 12 edition of CDT. It explained how a dishonest Attorney General could nullify the results of a presidential election in a particular state.
Then a letter by Richard London, “Another way to steal an election,” appeared on May 22. It explained how a corrupt Secretary of State would be able to accomplish the same goal, even more easily, “by the stroke of a pen.”
It appears that Mr. London’s concern might have been highly prophetic.
In his election-night comments, Republican gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano essentially promised that he, if elected governor this fall, would not hesitate to use his office to do exactly what Mr. London’s letter warned us about. In fact, he used the same phrase to tell us how easily this could be accomplished: “by the stroke of a pen.”
The London letter focused on Michigan, where the Secretary of State is elected by the people. In Pennsylvania, the Secretary of State is appointed by the Governor. Undoubtedly a Governor Mastriano would appoint a Secretary of State with no greater integrity than Mr. Mastriano himself possesses, so the election theft could be easily accomplished.
These are truly frightening times!
Misplaced blame for gas prices
The Trump supporter from Ferguson Township who claimed President Biden is to blame for higher gas prices (“Biden to blame for gas prices,” CDT May 26) couldn’t be more wrong. I’d love to see his evidence that supports his claim if any such reliable data exists. Several factors affect gas prices. Crude oil prices, federal, state, local taxes, refining costs, transportation costs all contribute along with supply and demand. Joe Biden has no control over any of those factors. Has the gentleman researched oil company profits over the last year? Perhaps greed should be added to the list of contributing factors. Numerous sources from Kiplinger to the Wall Street Journal to “How Things Work” explain it clearly. Joe has been blamed for everything but bad weather by his detractors. I hope the gentleman wasn’t crediting “his” President for the lower gas prices of the past. If so, he is equally mistaken.
Vietnam veterans still waiting for answer
“Grandpa, which of these veterans served in the Vietnam war?” This was a question recently ask to a Miles Township grandfather by his grandson. The problem was brought to light while showing a grandson his grandpa’s name on the local veterans monument in Rebersburg. There is no distinctive way of showing or honoring those that actually did serve in the war in Vietnam. The township did not replace the star that used to be etched beside the names of those brave veterans. Unfortunately they are all listed as Vietnam-era veterans. The stars were not replaced when the new pillar was replaced. No one has stepped up to say they were the one who made the decision or why. If you served in a war zone wouldn’t you want it noted on any monument that your name was on? This grandparent couldn’t give a answer as to why the township didn’t have anything to show who served in Vietnam — does the township have a answer? We Vietnam veterans from Miles Township would really like to hear one. Memorial Day is near, now would be a nice time to give us an answer to a question they have been avoiding for over 10 years.
