Letters: Unrecognizable GOP; Casino would hurt us all

Unrecognizable GOP

“What have you done to my party?”

John Heinz, William Scranton, Hugh Scott, Richard Schweiker, Richard Thornburgh are asking this. How a party who was run by men of character and integrity is now run by people who deny care to veterans and fist bump each other because of it — after they wrap themselves in the flag and screaming about supporting our troops. For our shame, it was the Senator of Pennsylvania who led them.

How come they nominate a man from New Jersey who is famous, among other things for touting a “miracle pill” that makes you lose weight when you sleep. Yes, Dr. Oz is a snake oil salesman, trying to get into the seat that was once John Heinz’s.

Or the nominee for governor, who is quite chummy with neo-Nazis. Because the originals were such nice fellows, so he wants the new version.

You hear that rumbling? A lot of old time Republicans are turning over in their graves.

Casino would hurt us all

We should take our neighbors who say they want a local casino so they can gamble more frequently at their word. The state government and the gambling industry do — and they are counting on our neighbors who currently gamble a few times a year in neighboring cities to begin gambling in the Nittany Mall casino every time they get a check. Unless our neighbors significantly increase their gambling, the proposed new casino would simply cannibalize the income from Pennsylvania’s other existing casinos.

Casino boosters say a local casino would bring the money that our gambling neighbors already spend elsewhere back into our own community. However, although a local casino would create some jobs and pay some taxes to the College Township government, most of the money that it would take would still leave our community as taxes to the state and profit to the casino’s owners. If our neighbors significantly increase their overall gambling expenditures because a local casino increases gambling accessibility and gambling addiction in our community, the total amount of money that leaves our community due to gambling would be significantly increased by the presence of a local casino instead of being reduced by it — and this would hurt us all.

Please e-mail the College Township Council at ctcouncil@collegetownship.org and tell them to do everything in their power to stop the Nittany Mall casino from being developed. The unnamed candidate

Republicans are sure proud of their candidate for Governor of PA. I saw for the first time today a television ad full of smears against Josh Shapiro. It just tickled me silly. My favorite part was that it did not even name their own candidate. I won’t name him either but if you hate women and would prefer a governor who won’t count any vote he doesn’t like, then vote Republican!
