Letters: GOP lies are local; Continued delays

GOP lies are local

Republican candidates for state representative have taken a page from their national MAGA leaders. GOP candidates Steve Yetsko and Justin Behrens both misrepresent their records and seek to mislead voters.

Yetsko’s recent literature indicates that he has specifically spoken to Democratic voters about three issues of concern to them: women’s reproductive rights, climate change and the environment, and education and school safety. But he slyly does not reveal where he stands on those issues — and a web search does not produce any answers.

Are we to believe that he goes against the policies of his party and supports reproductive rights, policies to fight climate change, and funding for public education and gun control to increase school safety? Very unlikely. His literature is misleading at best, and likely flat out dishonest.

Behrens has already been called out for literature and ads that distort his own record and promote blatant, half-baked lies about his opponent.

GOP candidates for state representative know they can’t win by sticking to the MAGA Republican agenda so they sneakily suggest that they endorse Democratic positions. But we won’t be fooled; we know they certainly won’t legislate that way.

On Nov. 8th, let’s show them that we want Representatives who truly reflect our values, and who don’t have to lie about where they really stand. Vote for Scott Conklin (77th District) or Paul Takac (82nd District).

Continued delays

News out of Florida: bridge to barrier island destroyed by hurricane replaced in three days. Meanwhile, here in Centre County: culvert replacement near Wingate on old Route 220 still unfinished 9 months in, expect delays.

GOP hypocrisy continues

Republicans’ hypocrisy and lies are endless.

Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Glenn Thompson voted against federal legislation requiring states to recognize same-sex marriages. Then Thompson attended his son’s same-sex wedding.

Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker mindlessly spews anti-abortion rhetoric and decries absent fathers. Evidence shows that he paid for his girlfriend’s abortion and has little to no contact with several of his children.

In 2012, Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis voted against federal funds for victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. Now Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants federal money for Hurricane Ian relief and reconstruction.

Republican Representatives nationwide are lining up for federal money from the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act for their home districts. Not one Congressional Republican voted for this bill.

MAGA Republicans repeat Donald Trump’s lies about fraud in the 2020 election. Not one Republican has produced a single bit of evidence of widespread voter fraud. They all accepted the legitimacy of their own elections on the same ballot. (If Democrats rigged elections, don’t you think Hillary Clinton would be president?)

When Republicans are called on their lies and hypocrisy, they double down, claiming lies are less important than other issues. But they lie here too, knowing the President has little to do with gas prices, that economic woes are international, that murder rates are actually higher in Republican-ruled states.

Republican leaders put party over country. Don’t let them get away with it. End GOP hypocrisy by voting them out of office.

Let Conklin continue doing the work

As ballots are being mailed and Election Day approaches, voters are familiarizing themselves with the candidates. The issues they support rank highest in these evaluations. Key issues such as a woman’s right to choose, support of public education, election integrity, and many more dominate the discussion. On these issues, Scott Conklin has a record to be proud of. But often overlooked is Scott’s outstanding service to his constituents, with no hint of partisanship. He and his staff show a level of devotion to constituent service at the highest level. Scott is doing the work. Let’s reward him by voting for him as state representative in House District 77.
