Letters: Vote abortion extremists out of office; Scrooge’s visit to Halfmoon Township
Vote abortion extremists out of office
Nearly 50 years ago, the Supreme Court legalized abortion. Women would no longer be forced into back alleys to end pregnancies with coat hangers.
In 2022, the Supreme Court reversed 50 years of precedent and outlawed a woman’s right to manage her health care needs.
This ruling, strongly supported by the Republican Party, forced a 10-year-old rape victim to travel from Ohio to Indiana for an abortion. The Court’s decision will likely result in at least 25 states banning abortion, forcing women who need an abortion due to rape, incest, health concerns or economic issues to travel long distances for their health care. Already, some women have nearly died because fearful hospitals or doctors have refused to provide the care their patients desperately needed.
Pennsylvania Republicans are ready to pile on. They’ve proposed a constitutional amendment to be voted on next May declaring that the state constitution does not grant any right related to abortion.
Three seats won by Democrats in November were vacated (two candidates won higher office and one died) leaving control of the Pennsylvania House, and the fate of abortion rights, unknown pending the outcome of a special election.
We likely could reach some consensus on abortion rights similar to how it’s treated in most European countries, which allow abortion in the first trimester, or in the case of incest, rape, or the life of the mother.
But we can’t have that discussion unless we vote in all upcoming elections — and vote abortion extremists out of office.
Scrooge’s visit to Halfmoon Township
Ebenezer Scrooge made a visit to Halfmoon Township on the federal holiday marking Christmas, Monday, Dec. 26. He influenced a majority of three elected township supervisors to vote to withdraw library funding for Schlow Centre Region Library, depriving families, students and literate citizens of information, entertainment and inspiration which costs the township less than the cost of one hardcover book per household annually. I eagerly await the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, who will reveal the secretive, improper and selfish miscreants who need to be voted out of office due to their disregard of their neighbors’ wants and needs. Bah Humbug, indeed.
Paterno behind the scenes in Immaculate Reception
As the football world knows, Franco Harris, legendary running back from Penn State and the Pittsburgh Steelers, passed away at age 72. Terry Bradshaw, Hall of Fame quarterback for the Steelers, was being interviewed on the NFL Channel. Bradshaw said he once asked Harris why he was in place to make the Immaculate Reception since he was to stay in the backfield to block on that play. Franco said, “Coach Paterno always told us, when the ball is thrown, run toward it.” He listened to his coach, and he was in place to catch that famous deflection that became the most iconic play in the National Football League history. Franco Harris had unwavering support for his coach. The moon is the reason for the tides, but we cannot see the attraction. Joe Paterno has been the behind-the-scenes success of many of his players in football and life. You can take down the Paterno statue and malign his character, but you cannot deny his legacy, which lives on even in the Immaculate Reception. Thank you, Coach Paterno.
