Letters: Vote for champions for working families; A passionate, engaging leader

Editor’s note: The Centre Daily Times welcomes letters endorsing candidates in the Nov. 7 election and will accept letters that are received by Oct. 30. Letters are subject to editing, must be based on facts and should avoid attacks on other candidates.

Vote for champions for working families

The upcoming November election will decide what kind of communities we live in.

As a labor movement, we know what kind of future working families want. We want stronger communities, strong public schools, and fair, democratic elections. We want elected officials that know that their job is to support working families, to stand with workers, and to ensure that our democracy is defended and strengthened.

We want champions for working families, not those who campaign for office to gain power and prestige. We want officials that will certify election results no matter the winner, not those that will place partisan politics above democracy. We want officials that make voting easier for workers struggling with long hours and family responsibilities, not those that will strip away ballot drop boxes.

Working families are tired of the politics of fear. We want a future where our communities come together, not one in which we’re divided by hatred.

Promoting a positive vision for all working families is why Seven Mountains AFL-CIO proudly endorsed Mark Higgins and Amber Concepcion for Centre County Commissioner. We know that they’re committed to building strong communities, bringing people together to find solutions to shared problems, representing working families, and defending our democracy and our votes. They’ve proven that through action and responsible, effective leadership.

We have a critical choice this November, and we choose to move Centre County forward through voting for champions for working families.

A passionate, engaging leader

I strongly support election of Evan Myers to State College Borough Council and urge you to vote for this experienced and principled leader on Nov. 7.

Evan is a successful businessman, who served as the chief operating officer for AccuWeather, a global business headquartered in State College, for decades. He has used his strong leadership, budgeting experience and business acumen to benefit residents bringing a disciplined and practical approach to Borough Council. Evan was twice elected to Borough Council and served as council president.

He is passionate about building the best future for State College and knows that can only be accomplished when neighborhoods, businesses, Penn State and students all work together. As a Penn State alumnus and former Borough resident, I have seen the positive impact of these groups working together to enhance our community.

Evan works tirelessly to promote policies that treat all members of the community with equity and respect. Many time he championed resolutions in Council and the Centre Region Council of Governments ensuring fair and affordable housing, protecting voting rights, the rights of immigrants, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. Strong local voices such as Evan’s protecting rights of all our residents are ever more critical in today’s world.

I have known Evan for more than 19 years, working with him at AccuWeather. He’s a passionate, engaging leader who truly cares about people and recognizes the reasons our diverse community is so special.

I urge you to vote for Evan Myers on Nov. 7!
