Letters: Centre Film Festival is a ‘top-notch event’; Staying with Franklin a ‘recipe for disaster’
Centre Film Festival is a ‘top-notch event’
In a crazy fast world of information, entertainment, streaming services, social justice messages — many of us find ourselves spending too many evenings aimlessly sifting thru Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube and more searching for something fulfilling to watch.
The Centre Film Festival, via Penn State, The State Theater and the Rowland Theater, has done that for us in a weeklong in-person event! An array of films celebrating our differences, telling stories, introducing us to dark sides of humanity, or entertaining us with lighter sides has been carefully selected. Educating us on current events, bringing us music and stories behind the artists and delving into humanitarian and international issues, these films were thought provoking, enlightening and entertaining. But the true gift was having the filmmakers, directors, actors and producers available for audience Q&A, a wonderful opportunity to learn about the motivation and journeys of these talented artists.
Penn State has a jewel of of film school in the Bellisario College of Communications. The festival opened with an array of films created by talented students.
Kudos to professor and filmmaker Pearl Gluck and her Centre Film Festival team, Penn State for its support, celebrity award winners and speakers Gary Farmer and Gerry Abrams, whose presence ensured that this was a top-notch event.
I encourage all that enjoy insight, enlightenment and entertainment via film a to attend this special event Nov. 10-16, 2024. And the popcorn is great too!
Staying with Franklin a ‘recipe for disaster’
I graduated from Penn State in 1963. Over the years I have seen a lot of football — great, good, and more recently bad, at least on the offense side of the game. A long time ago I concluded that James Franklin is a lousy football coach. Once again he can’t get the team’s offense act together. I will concede he is an outstanding recruiter but that is as far as it goes. Unfortunately Franklin has a long-term contract. What to do? Promote him to CEO for football and bring in someone who can coach. Staying with this guy is a recipe for disaster. Now only will we continue to lose games we will lose our best players to the transfer portal. Bottom line is that all Franklin does well is to roam the sidelines with a deer in the headlights look, not knowing what to do next.
For the Former Glory.
Adding to the list
Thank you to Norita Chyle for her letter in the Nov. 5 CDT providing a record of U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson’s numerous votes against legislation to improve the lives of Pennsylvanians. To this ignominious list one can add that only hours after a mob assaulted the U.S. Capitol, Rep. Thompson voted against certifying Pennsylvania’s Electoral College votes from the 2020 election.
