Letters: Green Party offers solutions, hope; America does not need Biden
Green Party offers solutions, hope
The CDT deserves credit for running the thoughtful editorial “Could a third party be the answer we need in 2024?” in the Dec. 29 issue. The piece mentions that Jill Stein ran a significant campaign for president in 2012 and 2016, and I’d like to add that the Green Party of the United States (GPUS) is likely to have her head the ticket again this year.
Unlike one-off independent candidate campaigns, Dr. Stein is helping to build the Green Party as the ongoing alternative we need to win solutions to the life-or-death issues of the climate crisis, growing economic inequality and insecurity, and the proliferation of wars in the context of a new nuclear arms race.
While the Democrats pass so-called climate legislation that still promotes an all-of-the-above energy policy of some renewables but also more fossil fuels and nuclear power, the Republicans simply deny climate change. Stein, on the other hand, is the champion for a Green New Deal for a rapid transition to 100% clean energy and real zero greenhouse gas emissions and for an Economic Bill of Rights to guarantee everyone economic security, including the rights to a living-wage job, an income above poverty, affordable housing, comprehensive health care, lifelong public education, and a secure retirement.
Stein calls for deep cuts in military spending and investment of the savings in a global Green New Deal for climate safety and economic security around the world. Please consider voting out of hope in November, not fear.
America does not need Biden
Marilyn Goldfarb stated in her recent letter to the CDT, “clearly, America needs Biden.” I don’t think so. The author fails to mention several significant facts.
Americans’ health is no better now than three years ago as COVID is still running rampant, and a serious flu virus is spreading across the nation.
Inflation reached its highest level in 40 years. The cost of everyday groceries is now 20% higher and gas is about a dollar per gallon higher than three years ago. The federal deficit in FY 2023 was $1.7 trillion, and it’s projected to get higher in 2024 thanks to Bidenomics.
Trump left office with a relatively secure boarder. We currently have a border crisis that can only be blamed on the current administration’s failure to enforce current laws and finish the wall halted in 2021. In recent days more than 10,000 illegal immigrants have been crossing the border daily, resulting in the most porous border in history. This is border security?
The author further states “Biden restored America’s Trump-tattered international reputation and leads the world in championing democracy.” Since Biden took office, the world has seen Russia invade Ukraine, an escalating war in the Middle East, and China rattling its sabers about an invasion of Taiwan. Finally, who can forget the debacle of Biden’s retreat from Afghanistan?
I’m not saying I plan to vote for Trump, but I’m certainly not voting for Biden who has produced record inflation, a porous border, and a world in turmoil.
