Letters: Trump remains a threat to democracy; Dangers of voting Democrat

Trump remains a threat to democracy

Donald Trump, the master manipulator, attempts to use the tragic July 13 shooting to silence the most persuasive and cogent argument against his reelection: he is an existential threat to democracy and unfit for office.

Republicans would have us believe, without evidence, that the deeply troubled 20-year-old shooter — a registered Republican, described by former classmates as “definitely conservative” — was inspired to kill Trump because of President Biden’s “dangerous rhetoric.”

Biden/Harris referred to Trump as an authoritarian threat to democracy — accurately describing Trump’s actions and words since entering politics eight long years ago. Biden condemned political violence and urged Americans to defeat Trump at the ballot box.

Trump and MAGA Republicans normalize talk of political violence, putting targets on the backs of those who dare criticize him, and openly advocate violence in speeches, podcasts, and social media.

MAGA Republicans glorify guns, especially the AR-15, the GOP weapon of choice in menacing campaign ads. They call for “revolution” and “civil war,” lionize Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed two unarmed people, and make a martyr of Ashli Babbit, a J6 rioter.

The MAGA cult leader himself approved chants of “Hang Mike Pence,” called jailed Confederate flag-waving J6-rioters political prisoners, and mocked the hammer attack that nearly killed Paul Pelosi.

Despite recent calls for unity, Republicans continue their violent rhetoric. Republican Senator George Lang of Ohio said if Trump doesn’t win, it’s going to “take a civil war” to save America!

No! No matter how Trump and his acolytes spin it, voters aren’t buying it!

Dangers of voting Democrat

Here are a few reasons why Democrats must never gain control of Congress and the presidency.

First, I believe Democrats will complete the nation’s descent into authoritarianism by:

  • ending the Senate filibuster, packing the SCOTUS with leftist judges, and further weaponizing the DOJ and leftist media.
  • opening the borders and passing legislation to grant citizenship and voting rights to illegal immigrants.
  • banning the sale and ownership of popular firearms.
  • declaring a “climate emergency,” giving the central government broad powers to mandate the replacement of fossil fuels with less reliable wind and solar and how and when Americans use energy.

Second, Democrats will embark on a tax and spending spree like no other. Initially, the rich will be taxed to pay for many new programs. But, when that fails to keep pace with rising costs, they’ll target the middle class and retirees.

Third, they’ll likely escalate the Ukraine conflict by agreeing to send U.S. and NATO forces to Ukraine, which could lead to war with Russia and their new friends, China, Iran and North Korea.

Ultimately, Democrat actions could result in:

  • The end of democracy (government by fiat).
  • an overall lower standard of living, including food and energy rationing, inflation, higher interest rates, a medical system overwhelmed by uncontrolled migration, and the replacement of individual homes with high-rise apartment buildings.
  • men and women being drafted to support a needless foreign war.

Think it won’t happen? Pay attention to what Democrats are saying. You can prevent this from happening by voting Republican in November.

Irresponsible jurisprudence

The blatantly unethical and partisan conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court has just, without any regard for our constitution, precedent, or common sense, removed perhaps the last remaining guardrail protecting our nation against Donald Trump’s worst criminal instincts by concocting a broad and loosely defined “presidential immunity” from prosecution.

Subsequently, the sentencing for Trump’s 34 felony convictions has been delayed until at least September. Holding Trump accountable for conspiring to overthrow the 2020 presidential election cannot now happen before the next election, if ever.

This irresponsible jurisprudence comes after also overturning the Colorado Supreme Court decision that Trump was ineligible to be on their state’s ballot due to his engaging in an insurrection per the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. The Roberts’ Court chose not to even address whether or not Trump had engaged in an insurrection and simply claimed that the state lacked the authority to make ballot access decisions even though the Constitution clearly entrusts states with this power.

Justices Thomas and Alito both joined this “gift” decision for Trump, despite the fact that Ginni Thomas was a ringleader in the January 6 insurrection and Alito’s wife has brazenly displayed flags aligning herself with MAGA extremists, thumbing their noses at the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, which states “A judge must avoid impropriety and appearance of impropriety.”

If the U.S. Supreme Court will not prevent Trump from remaking our nation into a criminal enterprise, who will?

The dangers of Trump returning to office have never been greater.
