Letter to the editor: Apply countersteering techniques when operating motorcycle

Motorcycle owners should Google “Motorcycle countersteering” and understand it before going out on the road.

Countersteering is not a race technique; it’s a riding technique that many riders have never heard of. Understanding it and using it will save lives.

Riding a motorcycle is the opposite of driving a car. If you slightly steer to the right on a motorcycle, you will go left. Steer left, and you go right.

That is the basic principle in countersteering. Practice this in a big, empty parking lot and you’ll find it’s true. Don’t find this out when you take your first ride and end up in oncoming traffic or sliding along the guardrails.
