Seeking clarification
In Cate Hansberry’s article (CDT, Jan. 13) about students in Bald Eagle Area schools she quotes from their teacher Todd Biddle, concerned that President Obama’s Jan. 5 executive action on gun control will affect their ability to hunt or fish.
I am confused and would appreciate some clarification on which aspects of that action undermine their ability in “hunting natural resources as a food source.”
My understanding of that order is that it addresses these issues:
▪ a business that sells guns must have a license and conduct background checks
▪ dangerous guns cannot be purchased through a trust or corporation, and dealers have to notify law enforcement of firearms lost or stolen in transit
▪ criminal history needs to be better communicated between states and the federal government
▪ hire more agents to overhaul and improve the background check system
▪ federal attorneys are encouraged to work with state attorneys in preventing perpetrators of domestic violence from obtaining firearms
▪ some clarifications regarding possession of firearms by those with mental health issues, and permitting better sharing of demographic information in conducting background checks
▪ encourage research into gun safety
Since I assume that the students he is referring to are neither perpetrators of domestic violence nor are suffering from mental health issues, then I fail to see where they are at all negatively affected by the president’s order. Did I miss something here?
