The gift of life

The month of April is National Donate Life Month.

Organ donation has been a cause close to my heart for nearly 20 years. In July 1996, when I welcomed my second daughter Abagael into the world, she was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a condition that required a liver transplant.

As her condition worsened, the doctors recommended that a living donor liver transplant was the best way to save her. My brother, Dwight “JR” Winck, offered to begin the testing process. Within days he was on the operating table giving Abby the gift of life.

JR has lived a good and selfless life. He stood beside me when my little girl needed a miracle. On April 26, in the Republican primary, please vote for my brother. I do not know anyone I would rather see elected than JR to turn things around for Pennsylvania and provide the servant leadership we so desperately need in Harrisburg.

My daughter is now 19 years old and a freshman in college. I thank God for my brother every day because I know that he put his own life and future at risk for someone so precious to me.

I ask you to follow my brother’s example and give the gift of life to others. I encourage you to become an organ donor by designating organ donation on your driver’s license. What better time to do this than the month of April, National Donate Life Month?
