Another option

Supporters of Bernie Sanders: Consider Dr. Jill Stein and the Green Party in 2016.

Maybe your gut says, “But we’ll have to settle for Hillary Clinton to stop Donald Trump! Voting Green would be throwing our votes away.” Believe me. I understand the thinking there and a small part of me even subscribes to it.

But aside from Sanders, Stein is the only candidate in the race whose values align with our progressive vision. Unfortunately, it is increasingly clear that our beloved Sanders will not be the Democratic nominee. We must accept this reality and take it in stride. Our grass-roots movement will need somewhere to go, and the mainline Democratic Party clearly does not support our voice.

Stein’s commitment to progressive principles like taking back our democracy from large corporations and the 1 percent is unwavering and matched only by Sanders. Her resistance against the fossil fuel industry is forthright — part of her platform states that the United States must transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources by 2030. The list could go on, but if you are interested, look up her plan at Jill2016.com.

According to Pew Research, about 40 percent of Americans are registered independents. As you know, Sanders does exceptionally well with independent voters. His coalition of most independents and virtually all progressive Democrats could easily transfer to Stein. We would then have a legitimate three-way race on our hands where the third option is the greater good, not the lesser evil.
