I read David Brooks’ article on Hillary Clinton’s failure to feel West Virginia’s pain (CDT, 5/9) just after watching Bernie Sanders listening to West Virginians telling him about their struggles with poverty, and pledging his full support.
He and Donald Trump are the two candidates who see what has happened to this country — but what will they do about it?
We know Sanders will attempt the gargantuan task of transforming government to meet the needs of all people (rather than just stockholders and corporations) but what does Trump intend? Is he just climbing up on other people’s pain to gain power? Or will he use his billions to bypass government and revive depressed areas?
We just don’t know. He has already hijacked the Republican Party. What an interesting election this is!
