Letters to the Editor

‘Honest and wise men’

Heard this on NPR in Garrison Keeler’s segment, The Writers Almanac:

President John Adams wrote this letter to his wife on Nov. 1, 1800, as the first occupant of the brand new White House. “Before I end my letter, I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.”

Enough said.
