Editor’s note: The CDT welcomes letters endorsing candidates in the Nov. 7 election and will accept letters that are received by Oct. 30. Letters are subject to editing, must be based on facts and should avoid attacks on other candidates.

Save us from yourselves?

A group running for the Bellefonte school board is using the slogan Save Our School (SOS). Their spokesperson claims that the district is heading in the wrong direction, that our kids are being indoctrinated, that school is not transparent enough, and that our schools are not leaving parenting to the parents.

The irony of this scare tactic is this group already holds a voting majority on the board. Logic would have it that if indeed this district needs saving, the current majority bears the responsibility for the problem. How can more members of the same group solve these imagined problems? It is nonsensical.

I encourage the public to not fall for this scare tactic but to research the candidates and decide for themselves. When they do so, they will find strong candidates, including myself, who can solve real challenges with integrity and diligence.

I am confident that the voters of the BASD will make the right decision when reviewing the candidates. They will see through the smoke screen and choose candidates that are focused on making the schools the best they can be for students, teachers, staff and the community at large rather than a small group with a clear political agenda.

AAUW State College seeks book donations

Have some books that you are through with? We have a great home for them. Now is a good time to clean out some closets ahead of the holidays.

After a very busy summer, with hundreds of book donations made at the AAUW State College Used Book Workshop, the stream of donations has slowed down considerably and our workshop volunteers now stand ready to receive incoming donations for processing.

Proceeds from our Used Book Sale next May — where books donations will be headed — will fund local grants and scholarships to advance equity for women and girls.

The workshop is located off 2197 High Tech Road near University Park Airport, State College. Follow the driveway to the large blue building at the rear. Books may be placed into the outdoor blue bins at the workshop entrance any time. If assistance is needed with a large donation, the workshop is open on Monday nights from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Thank you, book donors, for your ongoing support!

Clear choice for State College Borough Council

On Nov. 7, State College residents have the opportunity to elect Evan Myers to another term on Borough Council. Myers, a resident of State College for more than 50 years, has demonstrated his integrity, vision, intelligence and work ethic through years of public service in the Centre Region and a successful career as senior vice president at Accuweather, one of this region’s premier institutions.

How fortunate are we to have a man of this quality offer himself to serve on Borough Council? Myers wants to work for every person who lives in the Centre Region. He understands the urgent need for cooperation and respect between property owners and renters, between PSU students and people of all ages who live, study and work in this area.

Evan Myers understands the need for long range planning. He sees value in diversity, working to bring people together and find value in every demographic. He wants to continue to work for inclusive and affordable neighborhoods, where pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle traffic can coexist safely and where the residents can thrive.

Myers understands that the region must have strong and healthy finances, and that citizen input into the operation of our regional government is vital to the health of that government and of the entire region.

Evan Myers is the clear choice for State College Borough Council. Vote for him on Nov. 7.

Correcting Voters Guide error

The League of Women Voters of Centre County (LWVCC) thanks the CDT for publishing our Voters Guide as a separate feature. This made researching candidates much easier for readers. The LWVCC did not notice prior to publication that school board directors were still listed as cross-filed. Cross-filing can only occur in primary elections. Candidates were then listed by party in the CDT as a correction. The LWVCC apologies for this error and for any confusion it may have caused for candidates and voters.

Change of politicians

As a longtime registered Republican, the current GOP dogfight in the House of Representatives reminds me of a folk saying I first learned in the Third World: “Diapers and politicians need to be changed often, and for the same reasons.”
