Philipsburg-Osecola’s Matt Adams hits grand slam, 12th-inning homer in Braves’ win

The Atlanta Braves can once again thank Philipsburg native Matt Adams for a key win — after the P-O grad boasted a career day at the plate.

Not only did Adams hit his first career grand slam in the fifth inning, but he also smacked the game-winning solo shot in the 12th inning. He accounted for five RBIs in Saturday’s 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Adams finished 3 of 6 on the day, and his one-out, solo homer off Blake Wood (0-4) saved the Braves after they blew a lead for the second day in a row. It was Adams’ fourth career multi-homer game — and his first since 2014.

The Centre County native is now batting .273 this season with 18 RBIs and five home runs in 99 at-bats.

Adams, the former St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman, was traded last month — along with cash — to the Atlanta Braves for minor league infielder Juan Yepez, a 19-year-old prospect. Adams has been playing in place of Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, who’s still recovering from a broken wrist.
