Big inning propels Pirates to win

The Spike Island Pirates scored seven runs in the sixth inning in an 8-2 win over the Howard Hawks in Centre County Baseball League play Wednesday night.

It marked the end of the regular season for both teams — the Pirates (12-6) will head into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed, while Howard (9-9) will be the No. 3 seed.

Gage Coudriet struck out seven in a complete-game effort to earn the win for Spike Island. Drew Bryan finished with three hits, scored two runs and drove in a run, and teammates Logan Williamson had three hits and an RBI to lead the Pirates offensively. Derek Shaw also had two singles for Spike Island.

Trey Shaw had a two-run double in the Pirates’ seven-run sixth inning.

Jason Jones had an RBI single for Howard.

Coyotes top Pleasant Gap

Jeff Bennett led the Clarence Coyotes at the plate and on the mound in their 6-2 win over Pleasant Gap on Wednesday night.

Bennett earned the win on the mound and finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Coyotes (4-13), who jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Tyler Schall and Andrew Stover each had two singles for Clarence, and Kyle Granite added a double.

Zach Stimely paced Pleasant Gap (4-13) with two singles.

The teams will play again Thursday night to close out the regular season.
