Penn State hockey beats Arizona State to complete weekend sweep

The Penn State men’s hockey team had an enjoyable weekend trip to Arizona.

The Nittany Lions rolled over Arizona State for a second straight night, dropping the Sun Devils 4-2 Saturday at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz.

Penn State dominated play in both ends, outscoring Arizona State 11-2 in the two-game series and the first trip for the Lions to the home of the second-year program. It also was the first weekend sweep of the season.

Derian Hamilton and Brett Murray highlighted the night for Penn State (7-7), with the first collegiate goals of the careers of both sophomores.

The Nittany Lions peppered the net with shots for the second straight night, outshooting the Sun Devils 49-25 after holding a 49-15 advantage Friday.

Player of the Game

Brandon Biro picked up a goal and an assist for the Nittany Lions. The Sun Devils netted an early goal, and Biro tied it with a rocket blast set up by Sam Sternschein for his fourth goal of the season. Biro then assisted on Hamilton’s tally in the final minute of the second.

Scoring notes

Brett Gruber scored the early Arizona State goal, just 1:40 into the game. It marked the sixth time in Penn State’s 14 games this season a goal was surrendered in the first five minutes.

After Biro tied it, Chase Berger put the Lions ahead just 26 seconds later, and Hamilton extended the margin with his highlight score.

Tyler Busch cut the lead to one with a Sun Devil goal midway through the third, but Murray added the insurance goal with 1:13 left, hitting an empty net.

The career-first goals for Hamilton and Murray followed a day after Evan Barratt and Sternschein had registered the first goals of their careers.

In goal

Peyton Jones made 23 saves for the win, but his play was overshadowed by Arizona State’s Joey Daccord, who made 45 saves, including a series of three stops late in the first period while sitting on the ice.
