Bats help 'Cats remain undefeated
MIFFLINBURG - Central Columbia sophomore Teddi Snavely is a strikeout pitcher, recording 58 in the Blue Jays' four-game winning streak entering their Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II contest with Mifflinburg.
However, when the Wildcats got into two-strike counts Tuesday, they didn't fear a strikeout.
"Our two-strike approach has been good. Me, personally, I've been trying to work on having a better mindset with two strikes," Mifflinburg senior leadoff hitter Anna Pachucki said.
Mifflinburg snapped Snavely's streak of double-digit strikeout games at four, Wildcats' ace Taylor Stewart recorded the final 13 outs in a row, and Pachucki had three hits and three runs scored as the Wildcats knocked off the Blue Jays 11-1 in six innings.
"You get three strikes for a reason," Pachucki said. "I think we are all trying to have that mindset, and the mindset that (the pitcher) has to pitch to us. So we're going to get in there with two strikes, and still get a hit."
Mifflinburg (8-0 overall, 5-0 HAC-II) jumped on Snavely early as Pachucki walked and took second on Amelia Fluman's grounder back to the circle. Pachucki stole third on a throw back to the circle. Brooke Gessner then walked after an 0-2 count, and stole second. Stewart hit a sacrifice fly after falling behind 0-2 as well for a 1-0 lead. The throw home to try for Pachucki ricocheted around behind the backstop, and allowed Gessner to score for a 2-0 lead
Central Columbia (5-3, 3-2) got back a run in the second as Stewart struggled a bit with her location.
After Mckenna Jazinski singled and Abby Welkom walked, the Wildcats sniffed out a play on the bases. Jazinski was thrown out breaking for third on a bunt attempt by Grace Turner. Snavely then singled to cut the lead to 2-1, and she was the last Central Columbia player to reach base.
Stewart, who struck out three and walked one, retired the Blue Jays' final 13 hitters.
"We did change our approach a bit later in the game, but she hit her spots and made pitches," Mifflinburg coach Ron Hernandez said.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the second inning. Aubrey Fluman walked, and an error put runners at second and third. Pachucki lined a two-run double down the left-field line for a 4-1 lead for Mifflinburg.
The score remained unchanged until the fifth when Mifflinburg added three more runs. Pachucki singled, and stole second with one out. Gessner followed with an RBI single, and she also stole second. With two outs, Avery Reibsome singled home a run for a 6-1 lead. Reibsome took second on the throw, and made third on a throwing error. A second error in the inning allowed Reibsome to score.
Mifflinburg ended the game via the 10-run rule with a four-run bottom of the sixth. Miller singled, and stole second. Maggie Ruebendall reached on error that scored Miller. Pachucki then beat out an infield single. After Pachucki took second, Amelia Fluman singled home two runs for a 10-1 lead. The seventh error of the game by the Blue Jays ended the game.
