DLN Roundup: Whippets top Devils to remain unbeaten
The only 3A lacrosse program in District 1 with an unblemished record, the Downingtown West boys' squad moved to 8-0 overall (4-0 in the Ches-Mont) with a 12-3 road win at Avon Grove Tuesday evening. Ryan O'Donnell (three goals, three assists) led the way for the Whippets along with teammates Luke Kell (three goals, two assists) and Cole Epps (two goals). West keeper Landon Guarneri stopped nine of 12 shots on goal. The Red Devils have dropped four straight and fall to 1-4, 5-4 overall.
Bishop Shanahan 10, Coatesville 4 – Nate Kennedy scored three goals and dished out two assists to help power the Eagles past their Ches-Mont rival. Ryan Mattia added a goal and three assists for Shanahan and Brendan Heinerichs won 14 of 18 from the faceoff circle.
West Chester Henderson 12, Kennett 4 – The Warriors raced to a 7-1 halftime lead and cruised past the Demons. Six different Henderson players scored goals, including three each from Tyler Stukis and Joey Raffaele. Zach Abrahams added two goals and four assists and Nick Emmons chipped in two goals for the Warriors, and Alex Hodges went 14-5 on faceoffs.
Baseball
Coatesville 2, Oxford 1 - Zachary Daller scattered three hits and fanned seven in seven innings of work to lead the Raiders to a Ches-Mont road win against the Hornets. Jonathan Willard notched two hits and drove in a run for Coatesville. Cam Weaver, Luke Byers and Aiden Loesch had the three hits for Oxford.
Girls Lacrosse
Downingtown West 7, Avon Grove 2 – Ava Findora and Brinn Findora had two goals apiece as the Whippets (10-2) captured the Ches-Mont contest. Charlotte Weil had a goal and an assist, Stella Fitch notched a goal and three assists and Eme McComsey had a single tally. The West defense caused nine turnovers. Emmie Bressi made eight saves in goal. Maggie Dunckel and Emily Bullen scored for the Red Devils (7-3).
West Chester Rustin 23, Sun Valley 13 – Ava Cappelli poured in 10 goals and Bella Capelli added six as the Golden Knights (6-5) rolled to the Ches-Mont victory. Lauren McClain added three goals and Skylar Sherman had a pair. Brooke Scali recorded a goal and six assists. Viv Ardell recorded 10 saves in goal.
Conestoga 14, Penncrest 6 – The Pioneers outscored the Lions, 9-1, in the second half to break open a tie game at halftime to roll to the Central League win and stay unbeaten at 9-0. Lu Misener led the way with five goals and two assists. Maggie Neary collected five goals and an assist. Carolyn Jones, Lia Messina, Brooke Bickel and Julia Cowgill had single tallies.
Downingtown East 9, West Chester East 7 – Collyn Kropp had three goals and won nine draw controls as the Cougars (5-3) held off a second half charge from the Vikings to record the Ches-Mont victory. Ashley Januszko had three goals and Stella Phillips added a pair. Abby Lange notched two assists.
Villa Maria Academy 20, Gwynedd Mercy 5 – Sophia Tray collected five goals and four assists as the Hurricanes (5-2) cruised to the AACA triumph. Kaitlyn Aleardi recorded four goals and an assist, while Kayla Cellucci, Remi Burns and Aden Burns had two goals each. Blair Nagel and Alexis Marizzacco combined for eight saves.
Boys Volleyball
Avon Grove 3, Downingtown West 1 – The Devils prevailed 25-21, 17–25, 25–21, 26–24. Christian Wilburn (13 kills, five blocks, three aces) Rowan Weldon (12 kills, two aces) and Cody Bice (nine kills, 17 assists) led the way for the Whippets.
Boys Tennis
Unionville 2, West Chester Henderson 2 – The Longhorns improve to 11-0 in the Ches-Mont (15-0) after beating the Warriors. The highlight of the day came at No. 1 singles where senior Ryan Hart faced off against one of the conference's top players and came away with the straight set victory.
College
Softball
Delaware Valley 8, Immaculata 4; Delaware Valley 11, Immaculata 2 (5 innings) – The Mighty Macs (8-18 overall) dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader at IU Softball Field. Immaculata blew a 4-0 lead through four innings in game one. Alexis Andrada went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs, and Madison Formica chipped in two hits for IU.
In game two, Del Val led throughout and ended it with a seven-run fifth inning. Carlee Karcher paced the Macs attack with two hits and an RBI.
