Lewisburg girls win HAC-II crown
MILTON - Track and field athletes from Lewisburg and Milton are well-acquainted with each other after the teams shared a facility while Lewisburg's home was undergoing renovations last season.
Despite the camaraderie, the competition between the schools, and Montoursville heated up during an on-and-off rainstorm in Thursday's meet at Alumni Stadium.
Lewisburg's girls swept the Heartland Athletic Conference-Division II tri-meet with victories against Milton (91-59) and Montoursville (124-26). Milton beat Montoursville 119-30. With the wins, the Green Dragons clinched the HAC-II title as Milton also came into the meet undefeated.
On the boys' side, Milton won a close meet with Lewisburg (75.33-73.66) while losing to Montoursville. The Green Dragons defeated the Warriors 80-69.
Annika Shields led Lewisburg's girls (5-0) with three wins. Individually, Shields won the 800-meter run with a 2:34.56. Shields fronted a Lewisburg sweep as Lauren Schwartz and Claire Driver took second and third, respectively.
Shields ran on winning legs in two relays - the 4x400 (4:29.30) and 4x800 (10:26.82). Maddy Moyers and Kate Batkowski, who also took part in the 4x400, each won an individual event. Moyers was first in the 400 (1:02.35) while Batkowski took the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.34).
Ziva Williams and Gwynn Rowe finished 1-2 in the shot put and discus. Williams won both events while setting a personal best in the shot put (34 feet, 11 inches). Rowe also smashed a personal record in the shot put with a 34-1.
"(Milton and Montoursville) are very stout competition," Lewisburg girls coach Michael Espinosa said. "So coming into this the girls knew that they had to be able to perform. One of my main notes to them was that the team that competes instead of complains will have performances that they can be proud of. And while I'm sure all programs were able to step up to that today, I'm most proud that our girls were able to step up to that challenge."
Evalynn Keister led Milton's girls with two individual firsts, winning the 200 (27.03) and 100 high hurdles (16.57). Keister's time in the high hurdles set a new personal record.
Milton also got wins in the jumps from returning state qualifiers Jayanah Jones and Liz Schrock. Schrock won the triple jump with a 34-7 1/2 while Jones leaped to new personal best in the long jump - a 17-2 1/4 on her final attempt. Sienna Short won the javelin with a 112-9.
"Keturah Rice, Liz Schrock and Jayanah Jones - they're all three seniors, we just recognized them tonight (for Senior Night)," Milton girls coach Rod Harris said. "They're my jumping crew. They always carry us every single meet we go through. They always step up. They always perform, and they just do a great job for us."
Boys
Lewisburg's Jacob Weis and Justin Nolt led local athletes with two individual firsts each. Weis won two sprints - the 200 (23.60) and 400 (54.11).
Nolt was first in the 1,600 (4:40.19) and 3,200 (10:24.05) while leading the 4x800 to a 9:08.43 along with Jack Johnson, Grayson Barner and Hugh Ikeda Shields. Shields also won the 800 (2:04.96) as Lewisburg swept both the 800 and 1,600. Nolt took third in the 800.
"(Nolt's) just a class act, (and) a stud of an athlete," Lewisburg boys coach Ron Hess said. "He's just a wonderful leader on the team. So basically he's the type of kid when he needs certain things to be done, he's willing to step up and do them."
Cole Rhodes (100), Joseph Nietling (high hurdles) and Jake Harris (intermediate hurdles) won the track for Milton's boys. Lucas Shearer (pole vault) and Alex Krall (discus) were Milton's two winners in the field.
Rebira Jemama was Lewisburg's lone winner in the field with a victory in the high jump. Jemama, a first-year track athlete, cleared 6-2 on his final attempt for a new personal record. Jemama then failed all three of his attempts at 6-4.
