NHL writer Anthony DiGrazio wrote, "Basically said ‘you hear that, look what you guys did. Brought hockey back to this city.' Rod just gets it."
Analyst Sara also praised Brind'Amour's connection with Philadelphia throughout the series. She wrote, "It was awesome to see everything RB'A said and media he did with the Flyers this series. I feel like he really appreciates the fact that they still love him there and they ‘get' him."
While the emotional handshake gained attention, Carolina's dominance on the ice continued. Jackson Blake scored twice, including the overtime winner 5:28 into the extra period. Logan Stankoven also scored, while Frederik Andersen made 15 saves as Carolina improved to 8-0 this postseason.
The Hurricanes became the first team since the 1985 Edmonton Oilers to open the playoffs with eight straight wins. Carolina also swept consecutive playoff series and now heads to the Eastern Conference Final for the second straight season.
Despite the loss, Flyers fans stayed loud until the end, chanting "Let's go, Flyers!" as the team left the ice.
