PIAA TRACK AND FIELD: District 2 athletes earn No. 1 seeds for this weekend's championship meet
Mid Valley's Olivia Thomas, Dunmore's Jacob Costanzo, Nanticoke Area's Neveah Baran, and Dallas' Hunter Pitcavage posted impressive marks in winning individual events at last week's District 2 Track and Field Championship meet at Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium.
They all aim to carry that momentum to the PIAA Championships at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University on Friday and Saturday.
Thomas, the phenomenal freshman, earned the No. 1 seed in the girls' Class 2A long jump and triple jump and is seeded No. 3 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Costanzo is the top seed for the boys' Class 2A 400, while in Class 3A, Baran is the top seed for the girls' triple jump, and Pitcavage is in the boys' javelin.
The top eight finishers in track and field events are awarded medals at the state meet.
With Thomas leading the way, Mid Valley will contend for the girls' Class 2A team championship.
Thomas' distance of 19 feet, 5 inches in the long jump is ahead of West Catholic junior Amarah Crabbe (19-4.5) and Kutztown senior Clara Engel (19-2.75). Her district record of 45-10.75 is ahead of Grove City's Milena Sciullo (40-2).
In the 100 hurdles, Thomas is third behind Crabbe (14.44) and Wyomissing's Lily Paolini (14.48). Athletes are seeded only by their times in the final races at the district meets. Thomas ran a 14.52 in the preliminary heats to set a district record.
