Alice Ardelean Scores First-Ever 'Capsule Lock' in UFC History: Submission Explained
While most MMA fans may have been focused on the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano fight on Netflix, UFC Fight Night 276 delivered a bizarre and technically brilliant moment, as strawweight Alice Ardelean pulled off a submission never before seen inside the Octagon, forcing Brazilian veteran Polyana Viana to verbally tap with a "capsule lock" at 4:36 of the second round.
The Romanian strawweight entered the bout at the Meta Apex looking to extend her winning streak, while Viana desperately sought to halt a three-fight skid. Ardelean set a blistering pace early, landing heavy combinations and even dropping Viana to a knee in the opening round with a straight punch. She dictated the striking exchanges, but the truly historic moment came after the fight hit the ground.
Early in the second round, Ardelean secured top position, and Viana, working from her back, locked her legs around Ardelean's torso in a body triangle. While this technique could be used to stall an opponent's offense, Ardelean saw it as an opportunity (via UFC on Paramount+ on X):

By posturing up and trapping Viana's locked leg between their bodies, Ardelean applied immense pressure directly onto Viana's knee joint. The technique forced an immediate verbal submission from Viana as she screamed out in pain from the unnatural torque. The official record will forever mark this as the first capsule lock finish in UFC history.
What is a Capsule Lock?
The capsule lock is an extremely rare compression submission that has roots in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) but is seldom seen in high-level mixed martial arts. Honestly, it's one of those submissions done on trial-class white belts who don't understand how to navigate the bottom guard position very well.
The capsule lock is a counter to an opponent's figure-four lock. When someone applies a figure four lock, the ankle behind their knee or calf is purposefully locked in place. The attacker then pummels with their thigh to isolate the bottom ankle, forcing the ankle behind the knee or calf to slice into their ligaments.
In Ardelean's specific application, Viana's decision to lock a body triangle backfired catastrophically. By squeezing that figure-four from bottom position, Viana inadvertently created a fulcrum that Ardelean exploited by bridging backward and squeezing, applying pressure that traveled up from Viana's calf to hyperextend the knee laterally.
Viana's body triangle was also perplexing, as it did not have any real utilization. Typically, a body triangle is better suited to be used from the back position rather than the bottom guard position. Very odd choice for Viana, who is a BJJ black belt.
Unlike a choke that targets the carotid arteries and slowly blocks blood flow to the brain, or even a joint lock of the arm in which the recipient can feel their shoulder or elbow slowly hyperextending, the pain of leg locks is instant. It leaves the recipient with no choice but to tap or risk serious ligament damage.
Improvisation Leads to Brilliance
Following her victory, which earned her a $100,000 Performance of the Night bonus, Ardelean took to Instagram to give credit for the obscure technique. She posted a breakdown of the move, explaining that the inspiration came from a saved Instagram video:

During her post-fight interview, Ardelean expressed genuine shock when informed she had just made history for the promotion. "Oh! I made history," she exclaimed when told the move was an organizational first.
She also confirmed the unconventional origin of the technique, stating, "Yes, I saw it on Instagram, and I was doing it in the gym, but I never expected necessarily to do it in an MMA fight."
What's next for Ardelean?
With three straight wins, Ardelean is solidifying her status as a legitimate contender despite early losses in her UFC career. This victory proved she possesses a dangerous, creative fight IQ that separates prospects from pretenders.
For Viana, the future appears uncertain. The latest loss marks her fourth consecutive one, a streak that could jeopardize her roster spot despite her veteran status.
Ardelean's capsule lock will likely stand as a frontrunner for "Submission of the Year" honors, given its creativity and the fact that it was done on a BJJ black belt.
