NASCAR Legend Jimmie Johnson Reacts To Heartbreaking Death Of Kyle Busch

The NASCAR world is likely to be reeling from the sudden death of the great Kyle Busch for a long time and everyone from his friends and family to bitter rivals are paying homage to his incredible career.

Among the many to offer their condolences in these first 24 hours is NASCAR icon Jimmie Johnson, who appeared on CBS Mornings to call Busch "a spirited, ruthless competitor on track" and made sure to use the term ruthless "in the best way possible."

Those words were largely reflected in the Instagram post he made last night after news of Busch's death were first released.

"Kyle Busch wasn't just one of the fiercest competitors our sport has ever seen, he was one of the most talented race car drivers I've ever shared a track with. We spent years as teammates at Hendrick Motorsports, and even as competitors, there was always a deep respect for what he could do behind the wheel. Kyle pushed all of us to be better. His passion, intensity, and love for racing were unmatched, and his impact on this sport will be felt forever," Johnson wrote.

"I'll always remember the many laughs and conversations away from the spotlight, and most importantly the way he cared so deeply about his family.

"My heart goes out to Samantha, Brexton, Lennix, Kurt, his parents, many teammates across the industry, fans and everyone who loved Kyle.

"NASCAR lost one of its greatest talents today, and we've all lost a friend."

Johnson & Busch

The rivalry between Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch was one of the defining competitive storylines of NASCAR Cup Series racing in the 2000s and 2010s. Although they were briefly teammates at Hendrick Motorsports early in Busch's career, the relationship evolved into a fierce on-track rivalry as both became championship contenders.

Johnson represented consistency and championship execution, winning seven Cup Series titles, while Busch developed a reputation as one of the sport's most aggressive and naturally gifted drivers. Their battles frequently involved close racing, hard contact, heated radio exchanges, and disagreements after incidents on superspeedways and intermediate tracks.

Several flashpoints helped define the rivalry over the years. But even with the tension, the two shared mutual respect as elite competitors who pushed each other during NASCAR's modern era. Johnson often represented the established dynasty driver Busch was trying to dethrone, while Busch's raw speed and versatility made him one of Johnson's toughest long-term competitors.

It'll take a lot for any rivalry between drivers to match that energy in the years to come.
