TRACK AND FIELD: La Salle wins Boys Class 3A team title at PIAA Championships
Led by gold-medal performances from James Mahoney in the 400 meters and its 4×400 relay, La Salle won the Boys Class 3A team title Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Explorers finished with 33 points, just ahead of Grove City's 32.50 with Owen J. Roberts third with 26 points.
Mahoney took first in the 400 with a time of 47.74 while also placing fifth in the 200 meters with a finish of 21.78.
La Salle's 4×400 relay was second after the opening leg but was in the lead after the second and stayed in front as Michael Gorrell, Aidan Christy, Chima Auguste and Louis Burdick won with a NFHS Honor Roll time of 3:14.41.
The Explorers also earned fourth place in the 4×800 relay, Matthew Tate, Gorrell, Anthony Ukalovic and Bobby Franklin posting a 7:45.02.
Cheltenham's Amirah Nesmith won golds in both the 100 and 200 meters for the second straight season, the senior University of Florida commit helped the Panthers take fourth in the Girls 3A team standings with 23 points.
The Upper Dublin girls were a point behind, tying Cumberland Valley for fifth with 22. The Cardinals' Faith Castronuovo took silver in the 800 meters and anchored UD's 4×800 relay that claimed gold. UD also had its 4×400 relay place fifth.
JP McCaskey won the Girls 3A team crown with 42 points.
Gold in the two Boys 3A hurdles events both went to local athletes.
Central Bucks West's Lucas Stefaniak won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.07.
Springfield-Montco's Caden Bronson was first in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 37.77. Wissahickon's Dominic Harvey-Sheppard took bronze at 38.31 for his third PIAA medal in the event – earning third in 2025 and eighth in 2024. North Penn Penn's Morgan Brown was sixth Saturday with a 38.87 while Pennridge's Ethan Cirafesi was eighth at 41.69.
Nesmith won her third consecutive state 100 gold with a time of 11.61. She repeated as 200 champ with a 24.05 with Abington's Ella Swaijung taking third in 24.46 and Hatboro-Horsham's Ava Ray Edwards eighth at 25.16.
Nesmith was also a part of Cheltenham's 4×100 relay that placed sixth in Girls 3A – Amira Banks, Jadesola Turton, Nyla Rasheed and Nesmith finishing in 48.93. Norristown claimed silver in the 4×1, Natalia Johnson, Aniya Smith, Kayla Rivera and Layah Rose recording a 47.98 only bested by JP McCaskey's 47.20.
Upper Dublin girls 4×8 was second to Central Bucks East at the District 1 Championship but edged the Patriots Saturday, the Cardinals' Bree Hall, Brady Kullmann, Kerrigan Kullmann and Castronuovo won with a time of 9:05.75 with CB East's Isha Awasthi, Keira Tomlinson, Eleanor Swidorski and Ava Mignon earning silver at 9:07.56.
East bettered Upper Dublin in the 4×400, the Patriots placing third as Tomlinson, Reagan Donnelly, Mignon and Gabrielle Szyarto ran a 3:54.00. Upper Dublin's relay of Charlotte Marlowe, Castronuovo, Brady Kullmann and Tytiana Nelson took fifth with a 3:54.80.
Castronuovo also claimed second in the 800 with an NFHS Honor Roll time of 2:09.08. The UD junior was seventh in the event last year at states.
Norristown's Jade Webb took third in the Girls 3A long jump with an effort of 19 feet 0.25 inches on her first jump.
Gwynedd Mercy's Reese Miller ran an NFHS Honor Roll time of 10:26.24 to finish fourth in the Girls 3A 3,200 meters. Wissahickon's Berkeley Marcelis came in 15th
In the Boys 3A 3,200, North Penn's Justin Landis earned fifth place with an NFHS Honor Roll time of 8:59.09. Cheltenham's William Edgar just missed the medal stand, coming in ninth at 9:15.90. CB East's Tyler Tomlinson was 13th (9:15.90), Souderton's Stephen Keller was 15th (9:25.52) and La Salle's Ryan McCabe was 16th (9;27.97).
In the Girls 3A 400, Hatboro-Horsham's Edwards came in fifth with a time of 56.89 with CB East's Szyarto taking seventh at 57.54.
CB East's Ryan Fischer earned his second PIAA medal in the Boys 3A Discus as he finished sixth with a throw of 166 feet after placing eighth last season. East teammate Nathaniel Karpinski came in 10th at 155 feet, 10 inches.
Upper Moreland's Malik Rodgers took seventh in the Boys 3A 400 meters with a time of 49.54 and also ran on the Golden Bears' 4×400 relay that finished sixth – Thomaz Walker, Rodgers, John Allen and Kamsi Underwood posting a time of 3:21.57.
North Penn's Musa Herzi came in ninth in the 800 meters (1:54.06)
In the Boys 2A 800 meters, Archbishop Carroll's Himien Jones was fourth in 1:55.18.
Dock Mennonite's Stephen Archer won both the Boys 100-meter dash ambulatory (14.56) and 200-meter dash ambulatory (29.89).
Souderton's Mercy Miller took first in the Girls Ambulatory Discus Throw at 69 feet, 3 inches.
Wissahickon's Chase Merriweather was first in the Boys 400-meter dash ambulatory at 55.76.
