HS TRACK AND FIELD: District 2 athletes had successful weekend at New Balance National Championships

Wallenpaupack graduate Aiden Janowicz ran the final race of his high school career Sunday at the New Balance National Championships.

He finished 140th in the championship division of the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 57.99 seconds. Henry Birge of Nokesville, Virginia, won the national title in 1:48.32. Janowicz capped the weekend for local athletes at Franklin Field.

Crestwood's Isla Centak highlighted the District 2 performances at the meet. She won the title in the freshman division javelin with a toss of 119 feet, 8 inches Saturday.

Centak took the lead on her first throw of the competition with a distance of 115-0. She increased to 116-7 on her second and 118-0 on her third. Her best throw came on the fifth of six throws in the series.

Lakeland's Raine Kearney also competed in the event. She posted a personal-best mark of 105-4 and finished in ninth place.

Mid Valley's Olivia Thomas earned two bronze medals in the freshman division. She was third in the long jump and the triple jump during the weekend. She also finished ninth in the 100 hurdles.

On Saturday, Thomas, the PIAA Class 2A champion, had a distance of 39-8.5 on her sixth and final attempt. Jaliah Porter from Lynchburg, Virginia, won the gold with a distance of 41-5. Miami Elite's Ana Echevarria was second at 40-1.5.

Earlier in the day, Thomas ran a time of 14.89 seconds to finish ninth, one spot short of the final. Mylan Shay of Charlotte, North Carolina, had the fastest qualifying time of 13.95.

Those performances added to the bronze medal she captured in the freshman division long jump on Friday night. She leaped 19-6.5 on the fifth of her six jumps to finish third. Kaitlyn Boakye-Yiadom of Westford Track Club in Massachusetts won the national title in the freshman division with a mark of 20-2.5.

Abington Heights' Aliya Lucarelli completed her weekend by finishing 28th in the freshman division 200 with a time of 25.48 seconds. Lucarelli also finished 32nd in the 100 (12.53).

Wallenpaupack's Isabella Maslowska finished 70th in the freshman division 800 (2:22.16).

In the middle school division shot put, Justin Lezinski of Abington Heights came in 11th. He had a personal-best distance of 47-2.25. Leesport's Lincoln Miller won with a meet-record distance of 62-3.

Scranton's Vella Byrne finished 58th in the middle school division mile. She ran a personal-best time of 5:19.03. Luice Baring from Princeton, New Jersey, won the national title (4:53.25).

adidas Championships

Abington Heights' Kiana Seid finished 13th in the national elite high jump at the adidas championship meet in Greensboro, North Carolina. She cleared 5-1 in the event. A'Narri Copeland, of Hope Hills, North Carolina, won the national title with a meet record height of 5-7.

Kiana had an eighth-place finish in the pole vault (10-0) on Friday. Gwyneth Overton of Pole Vault Carolina and Evelyn Perrott of Forsyth Country Day School both cleared 10-11.75 to tie for the title.

Tayla Seid, Kiana's sister, finished 32nd in the middle school long jump with a best distance of 13-5. Legacy Runners AC's Zoei Johnson won the title with a mark of 18-6.
