Two summer league teams heading to states
Two summer baseball and softball league teams won the Section 1 tournaments last week, punching their tickets to play in States.
Titusville Junior League baseball
The Titusville junior league baseball team is heading to states after winning the Section 1 bracket last week. The tournament was held July 7-10 in St. Marys.
Titusville took down St. Marys in its first game, winning 3-2. Titusville advanced to play Meadville/Cochranton/Saegertown (CMS).
In its game against CMS, Titusville recorded 16 runs, including eight in the third inning to down CMS 16-5.
The win saw Kelvin Thomas, Brennen Alberth, Landon Kemp, Garrett O'Connor and Bowen Wakefield score two runs. Mason Dilemuth added four RBIs and Mason Wagner and Lane Rhodes had three.
On the mound, Wagner, Kemp, O'Connor and Thomas saw pitching duties, with Thomas recording four strikeouts.
After defeating CMS, Titusville was up against St. Marys in the championship, after St. Marys made it through the elimination bracket.
The championship game came down to the wire, with Titusville down 3-2 in the seventh. But, two walks that both scored runs secured the win for Titusville.
Stewart (no last name reported) scored two runs, including the seventh inning winner, while Wakefield and Rhodes added the others.
On the mound, O'Connor pitched in 5.1 innings, earning two strikeouts. Thomas pitched 1.2 innings also having two strikeouts.
Titusville is headed to the Junior League Baseball Pennsylvania Tournament in Northumberland. The tournament begins Wednesday.
Lakeland Senior League softball
The Lakeland Senior League softball team is heading to states after winning the Section 1 championship last week. The tournament ran from July 9-10 at Allegheny College.
Lakeland bested Brockway in a double-elimination bracket. Lakeland won by a combined score of 30-2.
In game one, eight different Lakeland players scored in the 12-1 win. Jocelyn Jordan, Abby Bender, Kara Dugan and Molly O'Grady all scored two runs. Rylee Beebe, Naia Harrington, Kelsey Brewster and Alex Dugan added one run. Josie Mihoci recorded three RBIs.
On the mound, Nina Brewster allowed only two hits, while striking out 11.
In the second game, Lakeland came out even harder, winning 18-1 in four innings. Lakeland scored nine runs in the first, eight in the second, before adding one in the third.
In game two, 10 different Lakeland players recorded a run, with five scoring more than one. Jordan, Nina Brewster and O'Grady scored three runs. Mihoci and Harrington added two. Bender, Beebe, Kara Dugan, Alex Dugan and Kelsey Brewster had one.
Mihoci, Kara Dugan and Kelsey Brewster added two RBIs.
On the mound, Beebe pitched all four innings, allowing two runs and striking out five.
Lakeland is headed to the Senior League Softball Pennsylvania Tournament in Mansfield. The tournament begins Thursday.
