Matt Storniolo was named head coach of the Northwestern wrestling team on Thursday.
The State College Area High School graduate had served as the Wildcats’ interim coach this past season after six years as an assistant coach. Storniolo was the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Penn State before he transferred to Oklahoma.
“Matt is the right person to lead this program and provide our student-athletes the best opportunity to excel academically, socially and athletically,” Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips said. “Over seven years at Northwestern he has been a tremendous mentor for our young men, and we’re excited to watch him continue to build this program in the nation’s premier wrestling conference.”
