Campus Corner: Altomare helps keep Kutztown’s basketball playoff hopes alive

The Kutztown women’s basketball team went into Saturday’s game with Mansfield needing a win to keep its hopes for a playoff berth alive.

Jenna Altomare made sure the hopes stayed alive as she poured in six 3-pointers to lead the Bears to an 84-75 victory. Her 18 points led the team in scoring. Now Kutztown must beat West Chester on the road Wednesday to guarantee its spot in the six-team PSAC playoffs.

Altomare’s six three’s are one shy of the school record for a single game. She has 80 from beyond the arc this season to lead the PSAC. The record is 81.

For the season the State College graduate is averaging 13.6 points per game and has 93 rebounds, 52 assists, three blocked shots and 43 steals.

Basketball

Dennis Fisher (Bald Eagle Area, Juniata) averages 5.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists. Juniata is 16-9.

Alexis Frank (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) averages 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds. Altoona is 6-18.

Bryan Sekunda (State College, Stony Brook) is averaging 7.3 points and 1.5 rebounds, has 34 assists and 10 steals. Stony Brook is 23-5 after its 18-game win streak was snapped last Wednesday, but clinched the America East regular-season title with a win on Saturday.

Taylor Allison (State College, St. Francis) averages 1.3 points and has 10 steals and 13 assists. St. Francis is 12-14.

Kaitlin Miller (BEA, PSU-Fayette) averages 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. Fayette is 13-11.

Kyle Kanaskie (State College, Truman State) owns a 12.3 scoring average and 3.2 rebound average to go with 56 assists and 34 steals. Truman State is 19-8.

Maddie Bastress (Penns Valley, Washington & Jefferson) averages 0.7 points per game and has 13 assists and four steals. W&J is 21-4.

Jaylyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Lock Haven) was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks, averaging 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games last week. She averages 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. She also has six steals and six assists. Lock Haven is 11-15.

Swimming

Marie Gingher (State College, Gettysburg) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Centennial Conference meet in 1 minute, 6.20 seconds. She also finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.59

Ian Schrock (State College, Gettysburg) was 11th in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.27 and 12th in the 100 backstroke in 54.56 at the Centennial meet. He also swam on the 200 and 800 freestyle relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays in the consolations.

Will Benner (State College, Gettysburg) turned in a time of 2:13.83 in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries at the Centennial meet.

Sam Eaton (State College, Dickinson) was third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.21 at the Centennial Conference meet. He also anchored the wining 800 freestyle relay team which swam a 7:03.89.

Carter Hardy (State College, Emory) was 11th in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.82 at the UAA conference meet. He also anchored the 200 free relay team finish ninth (1:23.93) and the 400 free relay team to ninth (3:06.15).

Joe Woodman (State College, Massachusetts) finished fifth in the 1,650 free to help the Minutemen win the Atlantic 10 team title on Saturday.

Wrestling

Leo Wortman (Bellefonte, Stevens Tech) has a 27-6 record for Stevens Tech (18-2), which won the Centennial Conference team title Saturday.

Indoor track & field

Tyler Shawver (Penns Valley, Lock Haven) was fifth in the 35-pound weight throw with an effort 45 feet, 5 ¾ inches at the Marc Deneault meet at Cornell. He was 10th in the shot put with a 37-0 ¼ effort.

Maddie Cingle (BEA, Lock Haven) was 10th in her section of the 3,000 in 12:21.46 at Cornell.

Nora Adams (State College, Bucknell) was 10th in the 5,000 meters at the Patriot League meet with a time of 17:56.10.

Kyle Adams (State College, Bucknell) ran on sixth-place distance medley relay team that ran a 10:11.98 and was 10th in the 800 in 1:54.81.

Zach Moody (BEA, Misericordia) was 13th in the mile in 4:42.88 at the Susquehanna Open.

Kylie Orndorf (Penns Valley, Juniata) placed 14th in the shot put with a throw of 32-2 1/2 (9.82 meters) at the Susquehanna Open.

Baseball

Saige Jenco (State College, Virginia Tech) is hitting .250 with three runs scored and three hits. Virginia Tech is 1-2.

Anthony Montresor (Penns Valley, PSU-Altoona) is 0 for 2 so far this season. Altoona is 1-3.

Jared Dailey (State College, PSU-Altoona) has a save in 2 1/3 innings of work. He has allowed six hits and four runs, all earned, walked three and struck out two.

Mark Curtis (Philipsburg-Osceola, Shippensburg) is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA. In 10 innings he has given up 12 hits and six runs, all earned, while walking four and striking out 10.

Mike Marcinko (P-O, Shippensburg) is hitting .333 with five runs scored, eight hits, a homer and an RBI. Shippensburg is 3-4.

Caleb Pepperday (P-O, Juniata) has pitched one inning and given up two runs and three walks. Juniata is 0-3.

Kyle Peterson (State College, Millersville) has pitched two innings and allowed a hit, walked two and struck out two. Millersville is 6-1.

Jason Costa (State College, Walters State) is batting .250 with seven hits, a double, a home run, five runs scored and four RBIs for the Senators (7-5).

Volleyball

Aaron Cymbor (State College, George Mason) has one kill in two matches played for the Patriots (5-8), who visit Penn State on Saturday.

Softball

Vanessa Cooper (Bellefonte, Umass-Lowell) is 0 for 4. Lowell is 1-4.
