Washington picks up weekly honors
After leading Penn State to a pair of road wins, including a victory over the nation’s No. 1 team, Penn State’s Haleigh Washington was named both the conference and national player of the week — by both the Big Ten and the American Volleyball Coaches Association — on Tuesday.
The No. 3 Nittany Lions beat defending national champion Stanford in four sets on Friday and host Texas A&M in five sets Saturday in College Station, Texas. Against the Cardinal, Washington put down 10 kills while hitting an error-free .625 and adding seven blocks. The next night she posted a dozen kills on .417 hitting with six blocks against the Aggies.
The senior middle blocker hit .500 for the weekend in earning the sixth conference player of the week honor of her career and first national award. She is the first Nittany Lion to pick up the Sports Imports/AVCA weekly honor since Micha Hancock in 2014.
Also Tuesday, Abby Detering was named espnW Player of the Week for her efforts in the wins. The senior posted her first career triple-double, with a career-high 11 kills, 10 digs and 23 assists, along with four blocks, against Stanford. She also had 32 assists and six digs against the Aggies.
The Nittany Lions (5-0) remain on the road this weekend for the Big Ten-Pac 12 Challenge at Illinois, facing Colorado on Friday and then get a rematch with now-No. 4 Stanford on Saturday.
Men’s hockey
James Robinson named captain
James Robinson will be the captain this season for the Penn State men’s hockey team, the program announced Tuesday.
The senior forward was an assistant captain last season as the Nittany Lions captured the Big Ten tournament title and advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals. He had three goals and an assist in 26 games last year after missing nearly all of his sophomore season, when he suffered an injury in the first period of the opening game of the season. As a freshman, he had four goals and four assists in 32 games.
The Nittany Lions also announced senior defenseman Erik Autio and junior forward Chase Berger as the assistant captains for the upcoming campaign, which begins with an exhibition game against Ottawa on Oct. 1, with the regular season starting Oct. 6 at Clarkson.
