Women’s golf

Penn State captures crown at William & Mary Invitational

The Penn State women’s golf team led through all three rounds of play to win the William & Mary Invitational on Monday.

The Nittany Lions’ Jackie Rogowicz came from behind to finish the tournament tied for first at 2-over. As a team, PSU was 24 over — two shots better than runner-up North Carolina-Wilmington (26 over) — at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort.

“It was a team effort, in that on any given round we used somebody’s different score,” coach Denise St. Pierre said in a news release. “It was a good thing that everyone contributed.”

Men’s golf

PSU finishes 13th

With three golfers in the top 50, Penn State finished 13th out of 16 teams at the Gopher Invitational to close the two-day tournament Monday.

Cole Miller posted a final-round 3-over 74 for a 6-over 219 total to tie for 28th at Windsong Farm Golf Club. He was followed by Charles Huntzinger (8-over 221, tie-42), JD Hughes (9-over 222, tie-46) and Alec Bard (10-over 223, tie-51).

Penn State totaled a 31-over 883. Arkansas won at 4-under 848.

Women’s volleyball

Frantti earns Big Ten weekly honor

Penn State’s Ali Frantti was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Nittany Lions to a big win over defending national champion Stanford for the second time in eight days.

Frantti put down 20 kills while hitting .320 and added five digs and two blocks in a five-set win over the Cardinal on Saturday. The night before, the senior posted 17 kills on .469 hitting with six digs in a 3-0 sweep of Colorado in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge.

The Nittany Lions (7-0), who picked up 14 first-place votes to rise to No. 2 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, behind No. 1 Minnesota, plays at Rec Hall for the first time this season, hosting Yale on Friday.

Men’s basketball

Tip time set for PSU-N.C. State game

Penn State’s game against North Carolina State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge will tip off at 7:15 p.m. on Nov. 29.

The contest, set for PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., will be shown on ESPNU.

The Nittany Lions host Bloomsburg in an exhibition game Nov. 5, then meet Campbell at the Bryce Jordan Center on Nov. 10 to start the regular season.

Cross country

Hunsberger picks up weekly honor

Penn State’s Jillian Hunsberger was named a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Women’s Athlete of the Week on Monday.

The senior took first in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday, her second win in as many weekends.

Penn State next runs at Oklahoma State on Sept. 30.
