Checking out Saturday’s highlights in Penn State sports — not appearing elsewhere in the CDT:
Women’s volleyball
Penn State bounces back to stop Iowa
The Penn State women’s volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss to Nebraska to take care of Iowa 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17 on Saturday afternoon at Rec Hall.
Simone Lee paced the offense for the No. 2 Nittany Lions (11-1, 1-1 Big Ten) with 22 kills on .409 hitting and 10 digs. Haleigh Washington added 12 kills and six blocks and Ali Frantti had 10 kills. Abby Detering gave out 28 assists to go with 10 digs, five blocks and four aces. Bryanna Weiskircher posted 25 assists and 12 digs, and Kendall White also had a dozen digs.
Taylor Louis’ 17 kills paced the Hawkeyes (12-3, 1-1), who have never beaten the Nittany Lions in 51 meetings.
Penn State next hosts Illinois on Friday.
Women’s golf
PSU leading field on Blue Course
UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State posted identical rounds of 1 under par Saturday and leads the 14-team field in the Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State Blue Course.
The two rounds of 287 give the Lions a 2-under 574 total to lead Maryland by a stroke in the 14-team tournament.
A trio is pacing Penn State. Madelein Herr is tied for first at 2 under with Maryland’s Laura Van Respaille and Seton Hall’s Madeline Sager. A stroke back are the Nittany Lions’ Cara Basso and Jackie Rogowicz. Lauren Waller is tied for 12th at 2 over.
The tournament’s final round will be played Sunday.
Men’s soccer
Badgers blank Nittany Lions
MADISON, Wis. An early goal held up as Wisconsin handed Penn State another shutout loss 1-0 at the McClimon Complex on Saturday night.
Tom Barlow netted the lone score 13:28 into the game from Chris Mueller, while Philipp Schilling made seven saves for the shutout — the fourth clean-sheet loss of the season for the Nittany Lions (2-4-2, 0-3 Big Ten). Penn State has managed only five goals in eight games this year.
Evan Finney made five saves for Penn State, which returns to the road Wednesday, visiting Temple.
Women’s tennis
Wikberg advances at Penn tournament
PHILADELPHIA Hanna Wikberg was Penn State’s only winner Saturday at the UPenn Invitational on Saturday.
The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, beat Madison Stevens, of Cornell, 6-3, 6-4. Taking losses in singles were Liyin Xu and Hannah Kratky, while falling in doubles were the teams of Wikberg and Frederikke Svarre, and Xu and Kratky.
