Field hockey
Penn State topples defending champion Delaware in NCAA opener
The Penn State field hockey team dethroned the defending national champions in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Moira Putsch found the cage six minutes into overtime for a 2-1 victory over Delaware. The No. 6 Nittany Lions (17-4) will meet top-seeded UConn (20-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday with a national semifinal berth on the line.
Gini Bramley had the other Penn State goal, and Greta Nauck scored for the Blue Hens (15-5) with 5:34 left in regulation. Jenny Rizzo made seven saves to earn the win.
“We really were persistent,” Rizzo said in a university release. “And our big thing is being relentless, not reckless, and I think we saw that a lot today, especially in the second half when Delaware kept coming down.”
Women’s volleyball
PSU win streak continues with sweep of Maryland
UNIVERSITY PARK No. 1 Penn State continued to make short work of the Big Ten, sweeping away Maryland 25-14, 25-21, 25-16 at Rec Hall.
The Nittany Lions (25-1, 15-1) have won eight conference matches by 3-0 sweeps and have dropped just seven sets since their only loss, 3-0 to Nebraska on Sept. 22. Penn State has won 15 straight.
Simone Lee put down 10 kills to go with 13 digs, Haleigh Washington posted seven blocks, Bryanna Weiskircher gave out 15 assists with 11 for Abby Detering, and Penn State won the blocking battle 13-7, forcing the Terrapins into .047 hitting.
The Nittany Lions host Indiana on Wednesday, the final regular-season match in Rec Hall.
Cross country
PSU pair earn NCAA bids
INDIANAPOLIS Penn State will send two members of the men’s team to the NCAA Championships to join the Nittany Lion women, after at-large selections were announced Saturday.
Penn State’s Colin Albert and Tim McGowan both earned spots in the championship race, which will be run Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky. They each ran to top-20 finishes at the Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday.
The women’s team won the regional to earn an automatic spot in the NCAA finals.
Women’s hockey
Lions tie Orange
SYRACUSE, N.Y. Sophie Slattery scored both Penn State goals in a 2-2 tie with Syracuse.
Meike Meilleur and Abby Welch picked up assists for the Nittany Lions (2-7-5), who are 1-5-5 in their last 11 games. Hannah Ehresmann made 23 saves.
Allie Munroe and Brooke Avery each scored on power plays for the Orange (2-7-2). The game was filled with penalties, with eight for Penn State and 11 for Syracuse, and the Lions were 1 for 10 on power plays.
Penn State returns to central New York on Nov. 21 to visit Cornell.
