Abert, Williams earn weekly Big Ten honors
ROSEMONT, Ill. Penn State’s Colin Abert and Bryce Williams were named the Big Ten Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
Abert posted a Nittany Lion Challenge meet record, running the mile in 4 minutes, 2.50 seconds at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Saturday. Not only was it a personal record, but Abert’s time is also tops in the country this season.
Meanwhile, Williams’ triple jump of 53 feet, 3.5 inches set a school record and comes in at No. 1 in the nation this year.
Abert, Williams and the Nittany Lions travel to the Clemson Invitational in South Carolina this weekend.

Beiler enrolls early
UNIVERSITY PARK Midfielder and Pennsylvania product Kelli Beiler joined Erica Dambach’s program as an early enrollee, the team announced Wednesday.
“We are thrilled that Kelli decided to join us mid-year and it was no surprise when she fit in seamlessly with the culture of the Penn State women’s soccer family,” Dambach said in a written statement. “She is an excellent addition to our program and brings with her an incredible family.”
Beiler — a Mount Pleasant Mills native — was a star at Midd-West High School. She finished her high school career with 126 goals, breaking her own single-season mark with 46 goals in 2017.
A four-time captain for her club team, North Union United, Beiler led the side to a 2016 US Club state U-17 title.

Schwarzmann added to staff
UNIVERSITY PARK Katie Schwarzmann — a two-time Tewaaraton Award winner — was welcomed by Penn State as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2018 season.
Schwarzmann starred at Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins reach four-straight Final Fours and win the national title in 2010.
The three-time first-team All-American was also a member of the United States women’s national team, guiding the team to the 2013 World Cup.
Schwarzmann and the Nittany Lions face Towson in their season-opener on Feb. 10.
